The polder Mijzen
Early december 2007 the Mijzenpolder was appointed the status of geological monument by the province of Noord-Holland. In honor of this occasion an informational sign was placed at the edge of the area, with information about the rise and shaping of this location. (Edit 23-05-2019: That specific sign has unfortunately been removed, but it's not needed to log this EarthCache)
The polder consists of sea clay, covered by a layer of peat. The sea clay is from the North Sea and came here through tide gutters between 7000 and 4500 years ago. The clay still contains remnants of seashells. The peat consists of mostly plant rests of reed and sedge and started to form on the clay around 4500 years ago. During its peak the peat had an estimated thickness of nearly 6 meters.
During the Middle Ages the area was developed and cultivated. Because of this, small rivers formed that resulted in the draining of the polder. By this drainage and due to oxidation the current layer of peat is only a fraction of its original thickness.
Logging
To be able to log this EarthCache, you must meet the following requirements:
- Take an (optional) picture of yourself or a team member near the informational sign.
- Mail the answer to the following 2 questions to mijzenpolder(at)nazgul.nu, or use the address in my profile.
- What is the name of the triangular piece of land (driehoekige perceel) according to the information sign?
- Originally the peat came to 1 meter above the current dike. Try to estimate how many meters it has receded during the ages to it's current level?
Logs which do not meet these requirements or with incorrect answers will be deleted.

De polder Mijzen
Begin december 2007 is de Mijzenpolder door de provincie Noord-Holland aangewezen als aardkundig monument. Ter ere daarvan is een informatiebord aan de rand van het gebied geplaatst met informatie over het ontstaan en de vorming van het gebied. (Edit 23-05-2019: Dat specifieke bord is helaas verwijderd, maar het is niet nodig voor het loggen van deze EarthCache.)
De polder bestaat uit zeeklei met daar overheen een laag veen. De zeeklei is afkomstig uit de Noordzee en werd via getijde geulen tussen 7000 en 4500 jaar voor heden afgezet. In die klei zitten vaak nog resten van zeeschelpen. Het veen bestaat voornamelijk uit plantresten van riet en zegge en begon ruim 4500 jaar geleden te groeien op de zeeklei. Op het hoogtepunt had de veenlaag een dikte van wel 6 meter.
Tijdens de Middeleeuwen werd het gebied langzamerhand ontgonnen en gecultiveerd. Hierdoor ontstonden riviertjes die zorgden voor de afwatering van het veenmoeras. Door afwatering en verbranding (oxideren) is de veenlaag tegenwoordig nog maar een fractie van zijn eerdere dikte.
Loggen
Om deze EarthCache te mogen loggen moet er aan een aantal voorwaarden voldaan worden:
- Maak (optioneel) een foto van jezelf of een teamlid bij het informatiebord.
- Mail het antwoord op de volgende 2 vragen naar mijzenpolder(at)nazgul.nu, of gebruik het adres in mijn profiel.
- Wat is volgens het informatiebord de naam van het driehoekige perceel?
- Oorspronkelijk kwam het veen tot ongeveer een meter boven de huidige dijk. Probeer in te schatten hoeveel meter het in de loop der tijd is ingezakt tot zijn huidige niveau?
Logs waarbij niet aan deze eisen is voldaan, of met onjuiste antwoorden zullen worden verwijderd.
