No Prime Like The Present (Auckland) Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

funkymunkyzone: I'm really unhappy with how Groundspeak screwed up a lot of cache page layouts in a recent upgrade, and this one frankly looks disgusting now. Like a lot of other pages, a lot of effort went in to setting it up and that was ruined because of changes made by Groundspeak that nobody apparently wanted. Seems like a good time to let this one go.

Geocache Description:

The new issue just arrived... early...

Check out last month's edition here.

ith continuing advances in computing technology, the search for the largest prime numbers has become an all but entirely automated task, using powerful super computers or vast arrays of networked computers all working together to process huge numbers, of 10 or more million digits, in order to identify the next largest known prime number.

Subscribe to Geocaching Monthly, and for a limited time receive a free selection of five back issues of Geocaching Monthly magazine. Offer open to new subscriptions only. Back issues selected at random from issues available.

The largest recent prime numbers found have been discovered by the Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search, or GIMPS for short. GIMPS is effectively a distributed application running on PCs all over the world.

It takes patience and a reasonably powerful PC to be a part of the GIMPS project. On an average PC it can take a month or more to perform a single primality test.

In order to locate this cache, you will not have to be a member of GIMPS, or to perform any ground-breaking maths. You will, however, need to identify the significance of the number below in order to get to the root of this problem. You will end up with just one three digit number, and you'll have to figure out where to add it to the published coordinates in order to find the cache.

Before leaving home, you can check your solution here. The cache is a small sistema container with a log book, pencil, stash note, some trade items and a geocoin to be moved on by the FTF. Good luck, and remember, there's no prime like the present!
