The shortest route from Holming Beam will take you into the the Merrivale Firing Range. Please check firing times at www.dartmoor-ranges.co.uk/firing before your visit.
From the parking area at Holming Beam follow the gravel path down into the valley, cross the river via the bridge and then it's uphill, then downhill....then uphill. You can follow the range marker posts to Crow Tor.
The cache is a small pill pot.
I saw my first letterbox on Crow Tor as a teenager who'd been sent off to the Dartmoor Training Camp for a week... in February. It was covered in snow at the time. Didn't find a letterbox this time around but it's a great place to just sit and look around. There's a rock to sit on with an overhang above which give some shelter in the colder weather.
For a longer walk you could come from Two Bridges, past Wistman's Wood, and avoid entering the firing range.
