Geocache Description:

A small bison tube at a beach access. Log Only, Bring Your Own Pen

While this is a great place to visit the beach, the reason I brought you here is across the street to the west. You'll see a hill covered with trees with a piece to deck sticking out of the top. That deck belongs to the house with the honor of sitting atop the highest point on Oak Island, or any of the surrounding barrier islands I think. This was one of only 5 homes to survive Hurricane Hazel in 1954. Of course there were fewer homes here then, and all of them were on the beach side of the island. The weather bureau in Raleigh reported that of the 357 buidings on what was then Long Beach, 352 were totally destroyed. It's good to be on high ground.
