These scraggly eucalyptus are the remains of a failed agricultural experiment. They were planted with the hope of producing a fast growing lumber crop after the original forest was harvested. Nevermind that they barely survive this far north in Florida, or that they aren't actually of any commercial value. A fine idea, like importing Cogon grass for cattle fodder, except that cattle won't actually eat Cogon grass.
I think it interesting that they've been somewhat protected here by Withlacoochee State Forest, further south they'd be on the eradicate list. Here they just barely hang on. No need to bring in the Koalas yet.
