Geocache Description:

Vale do Arquitecto

This is a hidden valley, near Mafra, where you can find the church of N. Sra. Do Arquitecto.

The construction of a church in such place is explained by two legends, they present two different explanations, but both valid.
The first one tells us that a fisherman made the promise of build a church to our mother of help, when his life was threatened on the sea.
The second gives the credit to the Architect responsible for the project of the Mafra’s convent. When his great project was finished, João Frederico Ludovice, decided to build a church in the higher and lower points around. They are the Socorro Hill and this valley (renamed to Architect’s valley afterwards).

The church was built in XVII century. The statues of the saints were made by artists from the Mafra’s School of sculpture. This school was created in 1754, during the kingdom of D. José I. Important Portuguese sculptors as Machado de Castro graduated from this school.

Every year, on Pentecost day (50 days after Easter), the place is populated with people who came to a small celebration in honor of our mother of help.
If this is the day of your visit to the cache, stealth is required, although, you can have some fun dancing popular music, and watching folklore groups.
