Tokyo may not contain the open green expanses of Hyde Park or Central Park, but there are a number of beautiful parks tucked away in the folds of the urban fabric. One such is Kitanomaru Park, which lies just to the north of the Imperial Palace.
Kitanomaru Park does what all good Japanese parks and gardens should do, enclosing you within its own little world and immunizing you to the surrounding din with its barriers of greenery.
There are meandering tree-lined paths for a contemplative stroll, shady nooks for courting couples, and an open grassy area by the pond for a quiet picnic or a leisurely game of frisbee.
The park is at its liveliest in early April when Chidorigafuchi - the avenue of cherry trees along the Imperial Palace moat - is hung heavy with blossom and packed with sake-fueled hanami parties.
The park also houses the Nippon Budokan, the Science Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Crafts Gallery.
