Geocache Description:

Cache in honour of Latvian Rifleman.

The biggest military operation in the territory of Latvia during 1-st World War happened in the surrounding of Lozmetejkalns - those named Christmas and January battles. While attacking along both banks of the river Lielupe, the goal of operation was to break through the German positions, to liberate Jelgava and further also Courland. The attack began on December 23 (the old calendar), 1916. The main assault group of the Russian army was made by the units of Latvian Riflemen. Without any artillery preparatory firing, units of Latvian Rifleman, who fought together as one division for the first time, conquered German positions around Lozmetejkalns and "Mangali" house. In January 1917, the German army began a counterattack to get back the positions lost in Christmas battles. They partly succeeded, but Lozmetejkalns remained unoccupied. In Christmas and January battles units of Latvian Riflemen lost 37% of their men.

Memorial Stone to Latvian Riflemen in Lozmetejkalns, as well as many another memorial sites in the Tirelpurvs tell about the fights of the Latvian Riflemen.

Lozmetejkalns is part of the Long Dune. It's 18.5m high and 70-300m wide. 27 m high viewer's tower has been erected here. From it have a look panoramic view on the forests of Zemgale in a radius of 30 km. In the winter time steps of the tower are slippery and so be carefull.

Near Lozmetejkalns you can also find place of the first geocache in Latvia, called Patriot (N 56° 51.997 E 023° 39.660), placed by mickehogstrom from Sweden in 5 july, 2002. Cache was hidden under a small cubic stone under a uniper bush in a hole in the ground. Currently You didn`t find anything, because Patriot cache was lost and so archived.
