Le Donjon d'Aliénor d'Aquitaine : Le vigile de la Sèvre niortaise

Monument emblématique de la ville et dernier vestige d'un vaste château, le Donjon de Niort est le deuxième plus important donjon de France après celui de Vincennes. Ce joyau de la fin du XIIème siècle accueille en son sein un musée composé de collections ethnologiques (coiffes, bijoux, costumes, mobilier poitevin) et archéologiques (de l'Âge du Bronze au Haut Moyen Âge).
Sur l'une de ses deux tours crénelées, une table d'orientation permet d'apprécier la vieille ville.

The Château de Niort is a medieval castle in the French town of Niort in the département of Deux-Sèvres. It is normally referred to today as the Donjon (keep) de Niort It consists of two square towers, linked by a 15th century building and dominates the Sèvre Niortaise valley..

The two donjons are the only remaining part of the castle. The castle was started by Henry II Plantagenet and completed by Richard the Lionheart. It was defended by a rectangular curtain wall and was damaged during the Wars of Religion. From the 18th century, the castle served as a prison..

The Keep now houses a museum (daily except Tues 9am-noon & 2-5/6pm; 17F/2.59, free Wed), it displays mainly local furniture and an extraordinary variety of costumes that were still commonly worn in the villages until the beginning of the twentieth century. .
