A hard climb to Graig Fan Ddu to reveal one of the most incredible views in South Wales.
On 23rd May 1942 Sgt. D.P. Carruthers of 53 Operation Training Unit, R.A.F. Llandow was on a formation flying exercise. A combination of bad weather and a small error in navigation was to result in the fatal crash of his Spitfire X4588.
I nearly scored a DNF on this one, but managed to track down a pile of stones and the remnants of his plane at the coordinates below. It can be boggy around the crash site, so I have placed the cache near the main path with it's incredible views over the Upper Neuadd Reservoir looking at Corn Du, Pen y Fan, Cribyn and Fan y Big.
The coordinates for two other nearby crashes are given below. Spitfire X4913 flew straight into the rock face of Pen y Fan on 03/11/1941 while Proctor NP 216 struck the west slope of Corn Du on 12/01/1945. Both were victims of heavy cloud cover. There is no visible wreckage from either of these two crashes.
