Near the site of one of several air crashes along this wonderful ridge.
On 6th January 1946 there was a knock on Owen Jones' door. It was Warrant Officer E.G.S. Monk. He told Owen how his Airspeed Oxford had become caught in a snow cloud and had crashed into the top of the ridge above them. The wireless operator, Flight Sergeant Gordon Robinson, had been killed and instructor Arthur Hopewell was trapped in the plane. Monk himself was badly injured, so it fell upon Owen to rescue Flying Officer Hopewell, which he did with great courage.
The crew had indeed been very unlucky, as another 10 metres of altitude would have seen them clear of the ridge.
The ridge from Hay Bluff to Capel-y-ffin claimed four aircraft during the 1940's. The waypoints for each are given below.
When I placed this cache it was the end of a long and very hard day. Weather conditions were so poor that we didn't stop to find the evidence of the crash. There should be some small parts about, as well as a very defined impact site, which is about 30m off Offa's Dyke Path. We would love to see your photos.
The other reason we placed the cache here is because of the excellent paved footpaths which carry the walker over boggy ground. Large slabs of stone up to 4'x4' are beautifully laid to make a great path.
