Geocache Description:

This Earthcache will take you to what we think is one of the most beautiful places in the world – Lake Tekapo, in the centre of the South Island, in the heart of the Mackenzie District.

The word Tekapo comes from the Maori Words Taka, meaning sleeping mat, and Po, which means night.

The sky is huge and of extraordinary clarity, making Lake Tekapo one of the world’s best locations to probe the heavens from its observatories atop Mt John.

The incredible colour of the water is caused by finely ground rock flour that is suspended in the lake waters. The glaciers that feed the lake grind the rock into a fine powder which is carried by the glacial melt waters into the lake. Sunlight is reflected off the particles giving the lake a milky turqoise blue colour.

Don’t go there at night as you won’t be able to appreciate the true beauty of the lake and nor will you be able to answer the questions below. Logs that do not meet the requirements will be deleted.

To prove you have visited and learned something please do the following:
1. Email the cache owner and describe, in your own words, as descriptively and creatively as possible, the colour of the lake at the time you visited, along with a description of the weather conditions (sunny, overcast, etc).
2. From the posted co-ordinates, take a stroll down to the lake edge and email the cache owner the altitude of the water level of the lake.
3. Take a photo from the posted co-ordinates, or nearby, showing the lake, the Church of the Good Shepherd (on the point across the river) and yourself or your GPS and submit it with your log. This photo is required.
Do not include these answers in your log entry - only the photo please.

You can log this cache straight away after you have emailed your answers to the cache owner, no need to wait for confirmation. Please include the name of this earthcache in the email - you'd be surprised how many people forget. Also, when contacting us with answers, if you want a reply, please include your email address. Any problems with your answers we'll be in touch.
