GC alum: I always try to write good logs. I guess this one is for me...

Beautiful day to be out - my kind of weather - sunny, some puffy clouds, cool with some wind blowing. Fall is coming on, and my favorite time of year is making its appearance. Just a week or so more and we'll get rid of these dumb mosquitoes.

I meant to get out here to grab the cache about two weeks ago, but then we had the big deluge and I decided to let things dry out a bit before returning. I finally managed to stop by today. Inside the cache was pretty nasty, but at least it hadn't been distributed around by some animal like it had been during my last visit. So I "trashed out" my cache. And that's that.

Well - it's a bit hard to archive this one. It's the first time I've had to do that, and I was rather fond of the puzzle. Thanks to all who visited, especially those who stopped by after the picnic when things were in such bad shape.

Waterfall Glen (from the website of the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County):


Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve may be the most astonishing parcel of open space in DuPage County, if not northern Illinois. One of DuPage's largest preserves, Waterfall Glen contains 2,488 acres of some of the most diverse plant and animal populations in the area, along with some of the most rugged landscape. A popular place with hikers, cyclists, equestrians, cross-country skiers, wildlife watchers and model-aircraft enthusiasts, Waterfall Glen truly offers something for everyone who enjoys the outdoors.

Natural History-
The topography of Waterfall Glen, and most of DuPage County, can be traced to one design maker, the Wisconsin Glacier. The ridges and potholes scattered throughout Waterfall Glen are a result of former ice action. Even the valley of the Des Plaines River was cut by glacial meltwaters and water draining from a postglacial lake that covered most of the Chicagoland area.

Its natural characteristics give Waterfall Glen the greatest diversity of habitat in any DuPage County forest preserve. Prairies, savannas, oak-maple woodlands and planted pine groves add to this diversity. Plant surveys by District ecologists have recorded more than 600 native plant species at Waterfall Glen. This biologically diverse area includes 75 percent of all the plants known to grow naturally in DuPage County.

Waterfall Glen is host to a bevy of wildlife that uses the preserve year-round and during migration. Records show 17 fish, 11 amphibian, 19 reptilian, 30 mammalian and more than 160 avian species.
Namesake Mistake-
Contrary to popular belief, the preserve was not named after the man-made waterfall in the Rocky Glen area. Instead, it was named in honor of Seymour "Bud" Waterfall, who was an early president of the District's Board of Commissioners.


I'm pleased that I work in the center of this place. When I started caching in April 2006, the Glen was was the place I went to search for my first cache. Now I'd like to add one of my own.

As mentioned above, the cache is not at the posted coordinates. The coordinates given are for the main entrance to Argonne National Lab and one of the Waterfall Glen parking lots (although not necessarily the one you'll want to use). To determine the true cache coordinates, you'll need to work through my little kakuro puzzle below. (A pdf version is also available at the link at the top of the page. Puzzle solving tips available upon request or by googling.) The decimal minutes portion of the north coordinate is given in the blue boxes. The minutes portion of the west coordinate is in red. The full cache coordinates take the form:

The walk to the cache is not difficult. If you use the same parking that I use, it will be about a mile and three-quarters round trip. Slightly shorter routes are available from other parking spots. There will be some minor bushwhacking at the end.
