Church Micro 52...Old Woking Multi-cache

The 52nd in this series is St Peter at Old Woking.

St Peter's Church in Old Woking stands at the end of Church Street. What we now call Old Woking was once the only "Woking" and St Peter's is therefore the historical parish church of Woking.

It was not until the turn of the century that the village of Woking became known as Old Woking after the village had given its name to the town to the north west which grew up with the coming of the railway in the mid-19th century. The Domesday Book records there was a church at "Wochinges", one of the old names for Woking. The Normans built the church on the site of a wooden Saxon church in the latter part of the reign of William the Conqueror (1066-87); traces of Saxon work suggest it may have been built as early as 1076.

The west door is the oldest door in Surrey and probably the third oldest in the country having been dated by dendrochronology to between AD 1106 and AD 1138 (the reign of Henry I). The wood came from a single tree that was over 270 years old when felled.
