Greater Toronto GeoBASH 2008 - Glen Haffy Event Cache

This cache has been archived.

res2100: Thank you once again to everyone, including the sponsors, volunteers and those of you who braved the weather to attend the event to help making it a great success. All the hard work and time put into this event was worth it to see the smiles on everyone’s faces and we hope everyone enjoyed their registration packages and prizes. Thank you for all of the wonderful comments.

I’ve put the final updates to the event cache page including a link to an article that the International Diabetes Federation did about our event. http://www.worlddiabetesday.org/news/greater-toronto-geocaching-event-raises-awareness-of-diabetes
Also updated the activities to include the winners and also the answers to such things as the GeoTrivia and Geocaching Necessities activities which I am sure you will find interesting. I’ve also posted the 10 winners of the grand prizes and also the 5 ways of logging Chester’s Mysterious Mysteries cache for those that were curious.

Also, if anyone still wants any of the official event coins, we still have a lot left.

If you haven’t done so already, don’t forget to log your Attended log on the cache page.

Time to archive the cache listing. We’ve already got several unique ideas for future events. If anyone wants to share any ideas or give us feedback about what your liked or what you think we should do differently or even what you would like to see at a future event, please don’t hesitate to contact any of us.

Thank you again,

Ralph (res2100) and the rest of the Greater Toronto GeoBASH 2008 organizers and volunteers

The Greater Toronto GeoBASH 2008 would like to welcome our official mascot, Chester.
Chester is a friendly chipmunk who likes to scurry around Glen Haffy Conservation Area with his friends. He likes to hide and find treasure chests. He's smart though, as he is able to find the treasure chests without using a GPS. You never know when or where you might bump into him.

Date: Saturday, May 3, 2008
Time: 10am to 7pm (Park closes at 8pm)
Location: Glen Haffy Conservation Area (Entrance off Airport Road)
Picnic Site: Ridgeview
Capacity: 800 People

This is a non-profit event. It is all about bringing geocachers together and having fun sharing in an activity that we all enjoy.

The 3rd hike in the BT Hike Event series went exceptionally well with a record number of 15 people completing the entire hike.

Glen Haffy is located at the crossroads of the Niagara Escarpment and the Oak Ridges Morraine. Dramatic hills and mature forests offer breathtaking views. The Bruce trail passes at the foot of the Niagara Escarpment and nature trails wind through the forest. Glen Haffy Conservation Area maintains a system of 3 nature trail ranging in length and scenery, totaling 6km.

The Ridgeview picnic area has a capacity of 800 people and offers a large shelter with hydro, water tap, volleyball nets and horseshoe pit. Washrooms have running water and are wheelchair accessible. Plenty of onsite parking is available is the designated area.

The park is open from 9am to 8pm.

We will provide the fire wood. No outside wood allowed.

Gates are normally locked at 8pm, however the park has agreed to leave the gates unlocked for us so that we may come and go as we please.
Parking: Please do not park on the grass. You can park at the Ridgeview picnic area or at one of the parking lots. There is a large parking lot just past our camp area.
Campers\trailers are permitted. They are allowed on the camp site as long as there is room and that there are not too many. Otherwise they can park in the main parking lot.
Facilities: There is a port-a-potty on the campsite as well as a water tap. We can also use the 2 washrooms located at our picnic site which is right next door to the camp site.
Please help us make sure that we keep the camp site clean when we leave.
If you are camping, mention this at the gate house when you arrive and they should wave the park admission fee.

Center coordinates were N43 56.263 W79 56.758. The triangle was an equilateral triangle.
Winner: Buttons and Beaux (Dave)

--Geocache Tag - It's like a cross between tag and hot potato. You don't want to be stuck with the cache at the end. Cache will be a 4oz container containing a log sheet. When you receive the cache, write your name in the next numbered line of the log contained in the cache, along with the time that you received the cache. You have 15 minutes to hand the cache off to the next person. When handing the cache off to the next person, make sure they know what they need to do with it (i.e., sign name, record time, hand to next person within 15 minutes). If for whatever reason you are not able to hand it off to someone else, then bring it back to one of the event organizers and they will take care of seeing that someone else gets it. Whoever has the cache at 4pm should find res2100 and give it to him. You do not want to be the last one holding the cache at the end, but if it is you, don't worry. A winner will be selected in a pre-determined way.
Whoever had the container at 2:27pm was the winner.
If you paid close attention, this was also one of the many logs\caches that allow you to log
Chester's Mysterious Mysteries (GCZMY4).
Winner: JUNGLEJ

--Get To Know Your Fellow Cacher V2.0 - A definite favourite at these picnic style events. However, we've taken this one to the next level. There will be 25 boxes. Each box will contain TWO items. Your task is to mingle and talk to others and get them to sign a box on your sheet in which both items in the box apply to them. You may not sign any boxes on your own sheet. Others may only sign one box maximum on your sheet. Once you have all of the boxes signed on your sheet, hand it in at the Activity Table.
Winner: Outdoors Nut
--Bunny\Penguin\Cat Art - Using the trackline feature of your GPS, draw an image of either a Bunny, a Penguin or a Cat. The trackline points must be within the Conservation Area. Make sure the trackline feature is turned on on your GPS and start walking. Watch the line draw as you walk around trying to draw the Bunny, Penguin or Cat. When complete, come to the Activities Table and show us your artwork. See if one of the event organizers can guess correctly whether your drawing is a Bunny, a Penguin or a Cat.
Winner: Earthsinger
--I Am Canadian Stamp Quest - You will be given a card and locations of 8 different stamps representing Canada located throughout the park. Your task is to find these 8 stamps and stamp your card with the associated stamps provided (bring your own marker\inkpad). Once you have found the 8 stamps and completed your card, hand in your card at the Activity Table.
Winner: The Dino Trackers
--Photography Tour - There will be 5 pictures of items\views posted at the shelter (Photos will be posted several days before the event so that if needed you can print out your own copies). You will be given the location within the park of these 5 objects\views. It is your task to figure out the coordinates of where each photo was actually taken. Write down the coordinates that you figured out on the associated card and bring them to the Activity Table.
Photo 1 (Pipe) - N43º 56.251 W79º 56.744
Photo 2 (Light) - N43º 56.320 W79º 56.773
Photo 3 (Shed) - N43º 56.320 W79º 56.770

Photo 5 (Shelter) - N43º 56.310 W79º 56.738

Winner: Cache Marauder
--Projection Connection - You will be given a starting point and then 8 projections, plus a couple of additional instructions. Walk to each of the projected points and continue until you get to the end. At the end, mark a waypoint, write the end waypoint coordinates that you obtained on your corresponding activity card and submit it to the Activities Table. All projections will use meters and True North.
The end point was 22.57 meters from the start.
Winner: Rainbow's Connections

--Scavenger Hunt - You task is to collect a number of items that you find around the park. Once you have found as many items as you could (some might be harder to find than others and some might require some ingenuity), bring them to the Activity Table to show one of the event staff.
Winner: TOMTEC

Find the correct missing piece, bring it back to the activity table, put the puzzle together and see if you have one of the 2 correct missing pieces. A team may only take 1 puzzle piece in total.
