Arco Della Pace [Milano Curiosa] Traditional Geocache

L'Arco della Pace si staglia, con i due caselli daziari, al centro del piazzale che funge da testata della strada del Sempione.
L'arco, detto anche del Sempione, fu iniziato nel 1807 su progetto di Luigi Cagnola, che s'ispirò alla tipologia a tre fornici e in particolare a quello di Settimio Severo nel Foro Romano (con un passaggio centrale affiancato da due passaggi laterali più piccoli).
Nel 1808 era costruito fino all'imposta dei fornici laterali; i lavori ripresero nel 1826 per interessamento di Francesco I Imperatore d'Austria cui, dopo Napoleone Bonaparte, si deliberò di dedicare l'opera col nome di Arco della Pace per ricordare la Pace europea del 1815. Dopo la morte del Cagnola (1833), l'opera fu compiuta e inaugurata il 10 settembre 1838 dall'imperatore Ferdinando I in occasione della sua incoronazione a re del Lombardo - Veneto. Nel 1859 divenne monumento all'indipendenza dell'Italia e le iscrizioni nell'attico, dedicate a Francesco I e Ferdinando I, furono sostituite dalle attuali inneggianti all'Indipendenza.
L'esterno è costituito da granito di Baveno con rivestimento in marmo di Creola d'Ossola; i due prospetti sono ritmati da quattro colonne corinzie scanalate. L'attico, che reca sulle fronti le iscrizioni, è sormontato dalla colossale Sestina della Pace, in bronzo, di Abbondio Sangiorgio, e da quattro Vittorie a Cavallo (una per angolo) di Giovanni Putti; sopra la trabeazione sono le raffigurazioni dei quattro fiumi principali del Lombardo-Veneto: il Po e il Ticino di Benedetto Cacciatori; l'Adige e il Tagliamento di Pompeo Marchesi.
Una ricca decorazione plastica, si svolge sulle fronti e suoi lati. I rilievi illustrano per lo più episodi della Restaurazione.

The imposing "Arch of Peace" Milan's major neo-classical monument with its two toll houses stands out as a landmark in the centre of the "piazzale" or large square at the top of Corso Sempione.
The original scope of creating the monument was to celebrate Napoleon's victories. Construction was begun in 1807 following a project by Luigi Cagnola> drawing inspiration from the typology of three "fornici" (arch shaped openings found in classical monumental buildings; as for example the Colosseum in Rome). The Arch of Peace was modelled, in particular, on the triumphal arch of Settimio Severio in the Roman Forum with a central archway between two smaller lateral archways.
In 1808 building work had progressed to the point of the layout of the side arches. After the defeat of Napoleone Bonaparte, Francesco 1st Emperor of Austria pressed for work to begin again in 1826. He had the bas-relief subjects changed to commemorate the peace at last restored to Europe in 1815 and at this point the monument was named "Arco della Pace". After Cagnola's death in 1833 work continued and was only terminated five years later when the "Arco della Pace" was inaugurated by Austrian Emperor Ferdinando 1st on the 10th September 1838 for the occasion of his coronation as ruler of the Lombardy-Veneto Kingdom. In 1859 it became a monument to the independence of Italy and the inscriptions on the cornice dedicated to Francesco 1st and Ferdinando 1st were substituted by those which can still be seen at the present day exalting the newly won independence of Italy.
The exterior of the arch is granite from Baveno dressed with Crevola marble from Creola d'Ossola; four fluted Corinthian columns at regular intervals are a measure of the sides of the façade. On the upper level are personifications of the rivers in the then Lombardy-Veneto kingdom: the Po, Ticino , Adige and Tagliamento. Mounted over the cornice bearing the inscriptions on the front is the huge "Sestina della Pace" (Chariot of Peace) in bronze by Abbondio Sangiorgio surrounded by the four Victories on horseback by Giovanni Putti. The front and sides are richly decorated with bas-reliefs mainly depicting episodes of the Restoration period.
