Herman Boerhaave (1668 - 1738)
Herman Boerhaave werd op 31 december 1668 geboren in Voorhout als zoon van de dominee Jacobus Boerhaave. De domineeswoning met bijbehorende tuin, later in de stijl van de toenmalige Leidse Hortus Botanicus gebracht, is nog steeds te bezichtigen (waypoint BHHS). Boerhaave heeft aan de Leidse Universiteit gestudeerd en is daarna hoogleraar geworden in de botanie, de scheikunde en de geneeskunde. Hij was een begenadigd docent en medicus. Hoewel hij zelf nauwelijks reisde werd hij zo beroemd dat van heinde en verre mensen kwamen om naar zijn colleges te luisteren en om met hem te discussiëren. Als directeur van de Leidse Hortus Botanicus heeft hij voor een enorme uitbreiding van de collectie gezorgd. Toen hij later het kasteel Oud Poelgeest ging bewonen heeft hij veel van wat hij niet in de universitaire tuin kwijt kon in zijn eigen kruidentuin geplant. De tuinen van het kasteel zijn nog steeds de moeite van het bezichtigen waard (waypoint KOP).
Herman Boerhaave was born om 31 December 1668 in Voorhout as the son of reverend Jacobus Boerhaave. Reverend Boerhaave's house with garden, later styled after the university garden - the Hortus Botanicus - in Leyden, can still be visited (waypoint BHHS). Boerhaave studied at the Leyden University and then became professor in botany, chemistry, and medicine. He was an excellent teacher and medical doctor. Despite the fact that he hardly traveled he was so famous that many came to listen to his lectures and to discuss with him. As the director of the Leyden Hortus Botanicus he enlarged the collection enormously. When he later lived at the castle Oud Poelgeest much of what he could not have in the university garden was planted in his private herb garden. The gardens of the castle are still worth a visit (waypoint KOP).
Vanaf het startpunt op de kop van het Rapenburg voert de wandeling langs de rechterzijde van de gracht naar het huis met nummer 31 (waypoint BH1), het huis van Boerhaave's illustere voorganger Franciscus de le Boë ofwel Sylvius. Boerhaave heeft hier, getuige het plakaat aan de voorkant van het huis, het laatste deel van zijn leven doorgebracht.
From the starting point at the head of the Rapenburg the hike leads along the right side of the canal to the house at number 31 (waypoint BH1), the house of his illustrous predecessor Franciscus de le Boë or Sylvius. Boerhaave lived here, according to the memorial stone on the front of the house, during the last part of his live.

Het Rapenburg vervolgend en links over de brug via de Houtstraat komt men in de Lokhorststraat en daar vindt men de Latijnse School (waypoint BH2). Het huidige uiterlijk van de school dateert uit de negentiende eeuw, Boerhaave moet de school anders gekend hebben toen hij er zich voorbereidde op de studie aan de universiteit.
Continuing along the Rapenburg and left over the bridge through the Houtstraat one arrives in the Lokhorststraat and there one finds the Latin School (waypoint BH2). The present facade of the school dates from the nineteenth century. Boerhaave must have known the school differently when he was preparing himself for his academic study.

Door de Muskadelsteeg loopt men naar de Pieterskerk. In de kerk is een grafmonument van Boerhaave te bezichtigen. Helaas is dit gebouw lang niet altijd open voor het publiek, dus hierbij maar een afbeelding. Voor meer informatie, volg deze koppeling.

Rechts om de kerk lopend komt men uit in de Kloksteeg en die loopt men uit in de richting van het Rapenburg. Aan de overkant ziet men het Academiegebouw met daarachter de Hortus Botanicus (waypoint BH3). In deze academische kruidentuin heeft Boerhaave veel werk verricht. Hij heeft gewoond in de directeurswoning die in die tijd aan de Nonnensteeg stond, waar nu het Rijksherbariumgebouw staat.
Turning right around the church one arrives in the Kloksteeg and one follows it in the direction of the Rapenburg. On the other side of the canal one sees the Academy building with the university garden Hortus Botanicus behind (waypoint BH3). In this university garden Boerhaave has worked a lot. He lived in the director's house that was in the Nonnensteeg at that time; now there is the building of national herbarium.

Terug naar de overkant van het Rapenburg en dan rechtsaf het Rapenburg oplopend komt men bij een zijstraatje, het Begijnhof (waypoint BH4). Dat straatje inlopend komt men bij een hek. Op werkdagen kan men de tuin inlopen: daar waar vroeger het grotere deel van het Faliede Begijnhof stond (een falie is een pij zonder mouwen en met kap, kennelijk de dracht van de toenmalige begijnen). Vanuit de positie van het hek ziet men links restanten van de Faliede Begijnkerk die zijn verwerkt in het universiteitsgebouw. In deze kerk was in de tijd van Boerhaave de bibliotheek en was ook het Theatrum Anatomicum gevestigd. Van het laatste is in het Boerhaave museum (waypoint BH6) een replica te vinden. Rechts heeft de woning gestaan waar Boerhaave, eerst met zijn stiefmoeder en later een paar jaar zelfstandig, gewoond heeft.
Back on the other side of the Rapenburg and then walking right onto the Rapenburg one arrives at a little side street, the Begijnhof (waypoint BH4). Walking into this little street one arrives at a gate. On working days one may walk in the garden: there where in the old days was the beguinage Faliede Begijnhof. From the position of the gate one sees on the left side the remainders of the church of the beguinage that are used in the present university building. In this church was at the time of Boerhaave the university library and the Theatrum Anatomicum of which a replica can be found in the Boerhaave museum (waypoint BH6). To the right there was the house where Boerhaave lived, first with his step mother and later a few years independently.

Terug op het Rapenburg vervolgt men de weg naar de Steenschuur en bij de kruising met de Breestraat gaat men linksaf. Voorbij het stadhuis gaat men rechtsaf de Maarsmansteeg in en komt men bij de Waag (waypoint BH5), rechts op de kruising met de Aalmarkt. In de Waag was de zetel van het Chirurgijnsgilde waar Boerhaave voorzitter van was.
Back on the Rapenburg one follows the street to the Steenschuur and at the crossing with the Breestraat one turns left. Past the city hall one turns left into the Maarsmansteeg and arrives at the Waag (waypoint BH5), on the right side of the crossing with the Aalmarkt. Inside the Waag was the seat of the chirurgeon guild that Boerhaave presided.

Links op de Aalmarkt en dan rechts de brug over de Rijn de Vrouwensteeg in die uitkomt op de Haarlemmerstraat. Hier linksaf tot de Sionsteeg waar men rechtsaf in gaat. Men komt uit bij het Museum Boerhaave, het voormalige Caeciliagasthuis (waypoint BH6). In dit voormalige ziekenhuis heeft Boerhaave veel patiënten gehad die hij samen met studenten behandelde.
Left on the Aalmarkt and then right across the bridge over the river Rhine into the Vrouwensteeg that leads to the Haarlemmerstraat. Turn left here and continue until the Sionsteeg where one turns right. One arrives at the Boerhaave Museum, the former Caeciliagasthuis (waypoint BH6). In this former hospital Boerhaave - together with students - treated many patients.

De Sionsteeg komt uit op de Caeciliasteeg. Deze loopt men uit tot de Turfmarkt waar men rechtsaf slaat, in de richting van Molen de Valk. Langs de molen steekt men de brug over naar het Schuttersveld. Onder het spoor door komt deze uit op de Rijnsburgerweg. Voorbij de busgarage kan men rechts de Boerhaavelaan in. Op de kop staat het standbeeld van Boerhaave (waypoint BH7).
The Sionsteeg leads to the Caeciliasteeg. One continues until the Turfmarkt where one turns right, in the direction of the mill de Valk. Along the mill one crosses the bridge to the Schuttersveld. Underneath the railroad the street continues as the Rijnsburgerweg. On the head of the street there is the statue of Boerhaave (waypoint BH7).
