Geocache Description:

Lake Okaro walk

Lake Okaro is one of the smallest of the Rotorua lakes, and also the most degraded due to inputs from the surrounding farmland. Strenuous efforts have been made recently to stabilise and improve the lake. An artificial wetland has been constructed to intercept inputs and chemicals added to the lake to sequester nutrients. To enhance the public image the lake is being developed as a recreation area, and a walking track constructed around it.

The lake is reached from either the Waikaremoana road at Rainbow Mountain or from the Waimungu (thermal area) road. There are toilets, a boat ramp and a free electric BBQ at the car park.

The cache is about two thirds of the way along the track, walking in a clockwise direction from the car park. This part of the track is flat and accessible to strollers, while the remainder is up and down and not so easy. To walk right around takes less than an hour, but those in a hurry can park at the point where the track comes out on the road and go anticlockwise to the cache location.

It is a little Sistema container with a notebook and a pencil.
