O que é uma “Villa”
Na sua forma mais básica, uma Villa romana, é uma moradia rural
edificada no centro de uma propriedade agrícola da Roma Antiga,
sendo normalmente, a residência de campo de um senhor de grandes
posses.
Este tipo de residências tinha todo o conforto da civilização
romana: Termas, Jardins, Cavalariças, e até Teatros. Tendo como
função a exploração agrícolas, algumas chegavam a ter estruturas
para alojamento de escravos e servos e Celeiro, Moinho ou
Lagar.
São Cucufate
Situada em Vila de Frades, a história da Villa de São Cucufate
começa já no Neolítico Final tendo sido depois o local habitado por
uma população pré-romana. Em meados do século I d.C., foi
construída a primeira Villa de dimensões muito rústicas. No século
IV d.C., grande parte da Villa foi demolida ficando apenas alguns
alicerces. Nesta altura foi efectuada uma nova construção com
estruturas do tipo palaciana e que perduraram até aos nossos dias.
Abandonando pelas durante as invasões barbaras, só voltou a ser
ocupado no século X pelos muçulmanos que fizeram da Villa um
mosteiro.
Quando a região foi conquistada aos mouros no século XII, a Villa
voltou a ser abandonada até ao século XIII estabelecendo-se nesta
altura como convento até ao século XVI e tendo como seu padroeiro o
Santo Cucufate. Evacuada pela ameaça de ruir, a Villa manteve a sua
capela e o seu culto até ao século XVIII.

the center of the Ancient Rome agricultural properties, and
usually, the field residence of a roman rich lord.

Spa, Gardens, Riding stables, and even Theaters. Being its main
function as a agricultural holding, some of them has structures for
slaves and servants accommodation and Barns and
Mills

Cucufate
Located in Vila de Frades, Villa of St. Cucufate story starts
already in the Final Neolithic, being inhabited by a pre-Roman
population. In the middle of the century I AD, was built the first
Villa in a very rustic size. In the fourth century AD, much of the
"Villa" was demolished leaving only a few foundations. At this time
was carried out with a new construction with palatial structures
type that, some of them, lasted to our days. Abandoned during the
barbarians invasions, was only occupied in the X century by the
Arabs who made the "Villa" a monastery.
When the region was conquered by the Portuguese’s to the Moors in
the XII century, the "Villa" was again abandoned until the
thirteenth century when it was established as a convent until
sixteenth century and having as its patron the Saintly Cucufate.
Evacuated with the threat of crumbling, the Villa kept its chapel
and its worship until the eighteenth century.
