Geocache Description:

One of the “seed caches” from the “SideTracked in BRUM – a WWFM” event which was the first time I participated in a ‘Flash Mob’! It was extra special because it was part of a World Wide Geocaching event which occurred at exactly the same time in around 80 countries.

About SideTracked
We have Motorway Mayhem (and apparently A-Road Anarchy and Village Vexation)intended to be quick caches for passers-by. They’re OK I suppose but not a patch on caches set in beautiful scenery or interesting places or with devilishly cunning puzzles to solve!
So ‘SideTracked’ caches were intended to be quick caches for public transport users at railway stations but being a contrary so-and-so who is not enamoured with the idea of loads of micros behind timetables, crash barriers and the like, I thought I’d use my 'gift' from the FlashMob event to set up a Mystery cache for the anoraks. So sorry all you “Cache & Dashers” and “First to Finders” of Traditional caches!!!!

About Shirley Station
It’s a railway station. You catch trains there. They go between Stratford and Stourbridge via Brum. The station is nothing special - unless you know different.

About the Cache
The co-ordinates above are for the parking area in Shirley Station. The cache is a 35mm film cassette within easy walking distance but you have to solve some of the questions before you set off (I suggest Wikipedia or / and Guinness Book of Records) and answer others once you’re at the station. It can be a very busy spot at times so you'll have to be careful and look like an anorak, trainspotter or waiting passenger!

The cache is to be found at North 52o 2 A . B C D West 001o 5 E . F G H

The 8 questions are all to do with trains and the exciting surroundings you will find yourself in the midst of.

i) A relates to the Cairngorm Mountain Railway. It is the journey time in minutes minus the number of cars in the train.

ii) The last “Golden Arrow” ran on 30th September 197B

iii) The ‘Flying Scotsman’ had C cylinders.

iv) The fastest steam locomotive in the world is number D D 6 8

v) There is a post in the car park with 3 CCTV cameras on it. It also has three 3-digit numbers on it which refer to each of the cameras. These numbers are 4 E 4, 4 E 5 and 4 E 6.
You should be able to get to ground zero easily if you can find this post.

vi) The “Flying Scotsman” LNER Class 3 Pacific Locomotive was number 4 P 7 Q and F = P + Q

vii) The bus stop at the station shows that 5 different bus routes stop there. The numbers for these buses includes all but two of the numbers from 1 to 9 inclusive. G is the larger of these ‘missing numbers’ minus the smaller ‘missing number’. The bus stop appears to have gone / been changed!! While I think of another question, I'll tell you that no bus had an 8 or a 3 in its route number.

viii) The LNER Class P2 locomotives designed by Sir Nigel Gresley had the wheel formation X – Y – Z. H is 3/4 of the sum of these numbers.
