Geocache Description:

Lock n lock - Geocache - Letterbox Hybrid

Do you hear that? Voices on the trail behind you. You strain to look but at first you see nothing. Then ghost like images start to appear. Four Indian braves of the Pootatuck tribe are coming toward you. Step aside and let them pass.

You are lucky. They don't see you. For in this other world of the past in which they live you do not exist. Scantily clad in buckskin and leather with bows strapped across their shoulders, they carry a long pole with the carcass of a large deer they have just killed. They are talking loudly about the hunt and the feast they will have tonight. There is no stealth here as they are approaching their home. Their camp lies on the hill just ahead of you.

As you follow them up the trail the smell of smoke drifts through the woods. "Ky-yi-yieee!" one of the braves yells out to alert the tribe of their successful hunt. A small boy comes running down the trail to greet his father. With adoring eyes he looks up at his father and reaches out to touch the deer. He takes a few steps back, turns to shoot an imaginary arrow into the deer, and runs ahead to tell his mother of the brave deed he has done.

But in the midst of this happy seen there is a sadness, for just a few weeks ago, Lillinonah, the daughter of Chief Waramaug died tragically. Despondent over the failure of her English lover to return to her side, and the disapproval of her father over their love, she sat in a lone canoe through the rushing water below awaiting her death. (Before the lake was created, the river below was a violent rapids.) But her lover returned only to see her canoe being smashed on the rocks and jumped off the precipice to try to save her. They were both lost to the river. Look HERE for the full story.

As of the setting of this cache, the trails were not marked so it may take some tracking skills to follow it. The wide gravel path leading into the woods dead-ends at an archeological site. Turn left through the woods and you will hit the trail again. Park at N.41° 32.601 W.73° 24.509
