Get Your Kicks On Route 66
Enjoy your drive down the Mother Road.
The intent of this series is to point out
historic or unique places along old route 66 between IL and CA. It
is NOT meant to be a power trail as caches may be 50 miles or more
apart. Stop and enjoy these sights along the way.
This cache is located in the town of Devil's Elbow and it was named
this by "tie rafters" coming down the river and their sometime mile
long rafts hanging up in the sharp bend in the river located near
here. They would say it had to be the "devil's work" that put that
elbow here.
This cache features two RT 66 structures. When you drove to Devil's
Elbow you were driving the path of the original RT 66 and the
bridge above still exists and is used by all traffic following the
road today.
Munger Moss Sandwich Shop was a popular stop along Rt 66 after
negotiating the hairpin turns coming into the town. It was built in
the 1930s by Nellie Munger and Emmett Moss and featured "Old
Kentucky BBQ and Orange Crush" In 1946 Munger Moss moved to
Springfield and the building was sold to Paul and Nadine Thompson
who renamed it the Devil's Elbow Inn.
The Elbow Inn has been open and operating almost continuosly since.
It still serves great BBQ and the food is good however I would no
longer consider it a "kid friendly" place as it is now mostly a
"biker" bar and at one time I have seen over a hundred motorcycles
parked outside on a weekend. But take a chance and you might be
pleasantly surprised at the good food still served.
The cache is a magnetic key holder with just a log so please bring
your own pen or pencil. I would pull into the gravel road just
before the bridge to park and get out and do a quick grab. But take
a moment to think about all the history that the bridge and Inn
have seen.
The traffic is normally so slow and laid back it is even possible
to walk out onto the bridge and snap a few pictures of the river.
I hope you enjoy this cache and your road trip down the "Great
Mother Road"
