"L’INIZIO DI TUTTO"
[ITALIANO] - Questa porta, fu costruita dove
dell’acquedotto dell’Acqua Marcia. Venne infine distrutta per la
realizzazione del mastodontico complesso delle Terme di
Caracalla.
Appia.

"THE
BEGINNING"
[ENGLISH] - Porta Capena was build where the
Sacred Forest of “Fons Camenorum” rose, to the
encounter of the hills Celio, Aventino and Palatino, rich of coves
and sources where it is narrated that the king of Rome, Numa
Pompilio, had its nocturnal encounter with the Egeria
nymph. Probably its original name was "Camena", it deriving
from the Sacred Forest. Porta Camena was part of Mura Serviane,
previous to Mura Aureliane that still today they can be admired in
their splendor to some hundreds of meters of distance, where rises
Porta San Sebastiano. In the 312 B.C. from Porta Camena began the
construction of Via Appia, the Regina Viarum, that it allows
to catch up Capua “only” in 5 days. Probably from that
moment the name was transformed in Capena. When the area had
lost its historical and legendary importance, Porta Capena was used
like arc of support of the aqueduct of “Acqua Marcia”. At the end
destroyed for the realization of the mastodontic complex of
Terme di Caracalla. Today of Porta Capena remain some little
fragments of masonry where is a marble plaque that remembers the
beginning of Via Appia.
