A Lenda do Pego das Pias
Conta a lenda que um lavrador tinha uma filha, que era a menina dos seus olhos. Certo dia a filha adoeceu gravemente. O pai, como a filha era a melhor coisa na sua vida, prometeu a um santo uma junta de bois e uma grade de ouro se a filha ficasse boa.
A filha curou-se, mas o lavrador não pagou o que tinha prometido.
Como a filha tinha o hábito de ir beber água no Pego das Pias, que era também onde os bois iam beber, ficou encantada.
Só quem for capaz de segurar a grade e os bois que vêm ao cimo da água na manhã se S.João poderá desencantar a filha do lavrador.
Diz-se que muitos já viram a grade e os bois, mas nunca ninguém conseguiu segurá-los...
Pego das Pias Legend
The legend says that a farmer had a daughter, who he loved a lot. One day, his daughter got seriously ill. As his daughter was the best thing in his life, the father promised a saint a pair of oxen and a golden plough if his daughter got better.
The daughter was cured, but the farmer didn't pay what he promised.
As the daughter had the habit of drinking the water in Pego das Pias, which was also the place where the oxen went to drink, she got under a charm.
Only someone who can hold the plough and the oxen that float in the waters on the mourning of Saint John will be able to save the farmer's daughter from the charm.
It is said that many have seen the plough and the oxen, but none have managed to hold them...

Estando na zona de Grândola (a esconder uma irmã mais pequena desta cache) e tendo como viatura uma Toyota Hilux 4WD 2.4d,
fizemos um "pequeno" desvio e fomos dar à Serra de Odemira. Passámos por Santiago do Cacém, Cercal do Alentejo, S. Luís e Castelão.
Pouco depois de a estrada começar a serpentear pela serra, deparámo-nos com este cenário:
Being around Grândola, (hiding this cache’s little sister) and having a Toyota Hilux 4WD 2.4d as vehicle, we made a "little" detour trough Odemira. We passed by Santiago do Cacém, Cercal do Alentejo, S. Luis and Castelão.
A little after the road started winding trough the mountain we met this scenic:

De volta ao carro, andámos mais uns metros até ao 2º local que encontrámos para parar, e continuámos a maravilharmo-nos com a vista do vale e da Ponte do Sol Posto (segundo o MightyReek, de manhã cedo, com umas réstias de nevoeiro, parece um cenário saído d'O Senhor dos Anéis, com uma ponte élfica e tudo. Claro que a Tehanu achou que sim, que era um cenário engraçadote...).
Back to the car, we travelled a few more metres until we found a 2nd parking spot, and there we continued to enjoy the wonderful landscape (according to MightyReek, early in the mourning, with some fog remaining, it looks like a scene from The Lord of the Rings, with an elven bridge and all. Of course Tehanu agreed that the scenario had its charm...).

Voltámos a entrar no carro e seguimos para baixo. Antes da ponte virámos à esquerda junto à cordial saudação.
We got back to the car and followed the way down. Just before the bridge we turned left, near the friendly salute.

Seguimos a estrada em frente. Passámos junto a um sítio onde estão a abater umas árvores e ficámos tristes com o cenário, mas seguimos em frente porque estava a fazer-se tarde.
We followed the road straight on. We passed near a place where they’re cutting trees and we felt a bit sad for that, but we kept on because it was getting late.
A estrada tornou-se um bocado enlameada e cheia de pedras, mas nada pára a "Cabritona" (nome carinhoso pelo qual é conhecida a Hilux da casa, baptizada assim devido à sua saltitante natureza). Uma coisa é certa: se fosse com a Vw Passat ela teria ficado bem lá atrás e tínhamos ido a pé. Mas não era o caso, e assim seguimos a nossa saltitante viagem por ali fora, embora recomendemos bastante a caminhada.
The road became a bit muddy and rocky ahead, but nothing stops the "Big Female Goat" (the name we tenderly call our Hilux, because of its jumping nature). One thing is for sure: if we’d taken the Vw Passat we would’ve had to leave it much sooner and walk the rest. But it wasn't the case, and we followed on, although we highly recommend the hike.
Um pouco mais a frente, a estrada parece seguir por dentro de um curso de água, tem pedras mas passa-se bem. As folhas caídas das árvores fazem um tapete fantástico.
A bit further, the road seems to follow trough a water course, there are some rocks but it’s an easy way. The fallen tree foliage makes a fantastic carpet.
E depois.... Chegámos. É um pequeno paraíso, cheio de mistério e histórias para contar. Tem até uma lenda própria.
Andavam uns fotógrafos por ali na sua actividade. Não quisemos incomodar e seguimos pelo lado esquerdo. Não vamos colocar muitas fotos do local para não estragar a surpresa aos visitantes.
And then... we were there. It's a small paradise filled with mystery and untold stories. It even has its own legend.
There were some photographers around doing their thing. We didn't want to disturb them, so we followed through the left side. We're not putting many photos of the place to save the surprise for the visitors.
Quando voltámos ao carro, vimos que não estava sozinho. Alguns familiares da Hilux tinham aparecido para a cumprimentar.
When we got back to the car we realised it wasn't alone. Some Hilux's relatives were around to say hello.
Vamos pôr uma breve descrição do caminho para a cache, pois no Verão este sítio deve ser movimentado e não queremos que dêem muito nas vistas a andar ali de um lado para o outro, mas podem ignorar esta parte se estiverem sozinhos.
We are putting a brief description of the way to the cache next, because this place seems to be busy in the summer and discretion is needed. You may ignore this part if you're alone there.
Seguir junto ao lado esquerdo do lago, para cima das pedras grandes. Depois virar à esquerda e seguir sempre junto ao precipício.
Passar junto à azinheira da foto e continuar a subir. Seguir o caminho que passa pelo meio das duas oliveiras gémeas da foto. Sempre por esse carreiro vão acabar por passar por cima de uma rocha grande, cuidado para não escorregar. Poucos metros à frente da rocha estão umas escadas naturais. O sinal não era muito preciso aí, mas a cache está num raio de 3 metros das escadas.
Follow through the left side of the lake, up to the top of the big rocks. Then turn left and go on through the cliff. Pass near the holm oak in the picture and keep going up. Follow the path that passes between the twin olive trees in the photo. Through that path you will reach the top of a big rock, be careful not to slip there. A few metres ahead you'll find some natural steps. My precision wasn't very good there, but the cache in a 3 metre radius from the steps.
Conselhos e Sugestões
- Podem levar crianças até ao local, mas o caminho até à cache é um pouco perigoso;
- Se o piso estiver molhado muito cuidado para não escorregar;
- Se estiver calor, achamos que podem nadar no lago, e é um bom sítio para diversas actividades ao ar livre;
- Não precisam de andar muito até à cache, mas a zona merece uma exploração mais profunda;
Advice and Suggestions
- You can take children to the place, but the way to the cache is a little dangerous;
- If the ground is wet be very careful not to slip;
- If it’s warm, we think you can have a swim in the lake, and it’s also a good place for open-air activities;
- You don’t need to walk a lot to get to the cache, but the area definitely deserves a deeper exploration;
