The
Legend....
In the absence of
enigmatic innuendos, dealing purely with the facts, this mountain
in question is steeped in legends. This mountain, considered by
some folks, is to be bewitched by various apparitions. These
apparitions range from the “Lady in White”, a ghostly icon
lamenting an early death, to the wailing of the “Lost Souls of
Premonitions” on certain moonlit windswept nights. But then there
are others who claim the ghostly icons are of a man watching over
his treasure.
Legend has it, in the mid
1800’s as telegraph was being developed, a young Lineman was sent
into the southeastern face of the mountain. He was to establish a
communications pathway for the town folk to the outside world when
something unexplainable happened. Isolated from civilization as he
slowly ascended the mountain, the Lineman was encompassed in a
squall of such immense power no equal has yet to be seen. The sky
darkened as thunder and lightning replaced the picture perfect day.
A few moments before the entire sky opened up, he heard a low
murmuring sound that unquestioningly beckoned to him. It was a
somewhat comforting melody that coaxed him onwards then
disappeared.
As exhaustion set in, the
hapless Lineman stumbled into a small shrine-like cave within the
“Cliffs of the Devil” just as a bolt of lightning struck a large
pole he was about to climb. The tempest raged outside the cave as
both white-rain and hail pelted the cliffs. Earsplitting thunder
bounced off the cave walls again and again so vocal the Lineman
could barely hear himself think. Then, the murmuring sound was said
to have returned, this time more pronounced, more definite, more
audible. Rising to his feet, he spied a small pipe-like hole in the
rockwall of the cave leading out to the north. Surprised, he placed
his hardhat over the hole; the murmuring stopped along with the
raging storm.
As the Lineman emerged
from the cave, the sky cleared and the sun beamed down. The pole
that he’d been about to climb was split from top to bottom leaving
a burnt creosote smell lingering in the area. Had the mountain
saved him? Was the murmuring melody whistling through the window on
the north wall of the cave be a mere coincidence? Did the mountain
recognize one of it’s own as the Lineman in question was born on
the very top of the mountain? One can only guess. Shortly
thereafter, the Lineman returned to the mountain to offer up a
treasure containing a spiritual grail as a tribute of thanks. The
Lineman was never heard from again and the cave was never found
though numerous attempts were made.
Close to the cliffs, a
shattered pole lay as testimony to the myth. Rumors abound even
today that the cave still contains the treasure and spirited grail
of considerable wealth. Many have attempted to seek the treasure
but have been ravaged by the Lineman’s ghost and a rare 30” black
bat of undetermined origin, which guards the treasure. An added
mystic and wondering surround this area and one will find
themselves believing the mountain is beckoning to them to take the
next step, then another to find the treasure also known as the
grail of the Alleghenies.
If you still seek to find
the treasure and its spiritual grail, you must be forewarned that
you are about to embark on an adventure, an adventure of epic
proportions. The exact location of the cave is a mystery to all yet
three clues are known.
Clue #1: The treasure
lies in the cave at Latitude N40-31.632.
Clue #2: The treasure’s
Longitude can be found by first locating the entrance to a watery
cavern at the marked coordinates above and parking along sugar run
road. From the entrance you will travel approximately 95 paces to
discover a small container. The container is said to hold the
Longitude.
Clue #3: Most attempts to
find the treasure have begun at a location beginning with a
Latitude of N40 and a Longitude of W078. The remainder of the
coordinates are said to be located in the watery cavern as well but
at 55 paces instead of 95 paces.
Though it is a short
distance to the treasure chest, you must choose your approach
wisely as your survival depends on it. Besides the Lineman’s ghost
and the 30” bat, one must be able to outwit raging critters, cross
rapid flowing waters, avoid abandoned cable lines, laugh in the
face of poisonous ivy, wisely navigate the rugged terrain, and not
disturb the white bees and baby rattlers within the chest. You must
also be well prepared, as ropes may be needed. If you manage to
reach the area of the treasure, you will first be overwhelmed by
the “Cliffs of the Devil”. Here, within the cliffs, lays the cave
containing the treasure and the widely sought spiritual
grail.
So will you be the
First-To-Find treasure and get the Grail of the Alleghenies? Just
heed the warnings and remember...
