Short walk along part of the Laxey Heritage trail. Access is mostly easy walking although it is slightly rough underfoot at times.
The Great Laxey Mine was extensive and at its peak employed over 600 miners. Mining for lead and zinc began at Laxey in about 1780. By the mid 1870's the Great Laxey Mine was one of the richest and most successful metal mines in Britain. Shafts had been sunk to depths of over 2000 feet deep. The main level of the mine was known as the Adit Level. An essential part of the mining process was the separation of the waste stone from the precious ores in preparation for its transportation to the market place. These processes were carried out in the area known as the 'washing floors'. This area has now been restored and you may like to visit the washing floors after completing the cache. This is now known as the Valley Gardens. In the Summer a Miniature Railway runs back and forth along this area. The first micro is down the footpath from the Parking Area signposted Coaches.
