A sedimentary hill that is different from the area around it.
On the plateau van Ubachsberg and Huls are several hills. These are the remains of the tertiary delta, of which the marl-lowlands is a part. The shallow slopes form the area "Vrouwenheide", and can be seen from far away. From the parking lot, at the east side of the hill, a path runs into the forest. Instead of Löss, like in the entire area around the hill, you will find pebbles at the surface. it is special that these pebbles consist mainly of flintstones, milkquartz and quartzit. A specific pebble that one will find in the pebbles of Vrouwenheide, is the kiezeloöliet. It consists of a light grey mass, in which many small colored, egg-shaped grains are located. These shapes are originally "glued-in" lime particles, which came into being in the ocean due to sedimentation of many thin layers of lime around a small core. Later the lime dissolved due to the introduction of silicon dioxide; the structure however stayed the same. remarkable is the large number of larger stones in this layer of pebbles. Extremely special is the presence of yellowish reddish sand, coming from the Oligocene, that can be found in some pits underneath this layer. The bright color is known from soils from the subtropics, and is caused by high levels of iron and aluminum in the sand. The presence of this sand also proves that the area of Vrouwenheide was part of the Ardennes Delta during the Pleistocene. From this hill however you will have a magnificent view from the younger Pleistoce Landscape. At the end of the Tertiary, about 2.2 million years ago this hill formed the northern riverwall of the Eastern Meusse. During the youngest part of this epoch (1.7 million years ago) this river flooded, creating the eldest valley of the West Meusse.
