Crisbeq Battery
|
This cache is
situated near to the village of St Marcouf at the WW11 German
battery at Crisbecq. |
Crisbeq Battery - Location
|
This
battery was the only heavy guns site on the eastern coast of the
Contentin Peninsula. From the site of the battery the coast could
be seen and defended from St Vaast Du Hougue to Grand-Camp Maisey.
This was a keystone in the Atlantic wall which the Germans believed
would successfully defend the coast of France from the allies.

|
Crisbeq Battery - History
|
The
battery consisted of 3 enormous concrete structures which housed 3
x 210 mm guns made in Czechoslovakia at the Skoda Factory. These
guns were formidable opponents to the allied invasion as they fired
125kg explosive shells and had a range of 30,000 meters - 18.64
miles. In order to attempt to put them out of the battle the allies
dropped hundreds of tones of bombs but despite heavy bombardment
from the sea the guns were eventually captured intact. Out of the
406 defenders at the battery only 78 men were forced to remain at
the battery. You can walk around two of the battery sites, without
charge, and can see the view of the coast from the top of one of
them, with care.
