The Mansion Series
Thornhill Mansion
W.C. Stiles Jr. the “Father of Volcano” built Thornhill for his family in 1874 at cost of $60,000.00. It was built in the form of a Maltese Cross with 3 floors of 25 rooms.
Thornhill possessed a commanding view of Volcano and the surrounding oilfields.
A large cistern provided running water to Thornhill and it was the first residence in Wood County to have a bathtub.
Well manicured grounds and elegant flower gardens accented this stately mansion.
A grounds manager and staff tended the wine cellar, fruit and vegetable cellar, large barn, stables, and a tennis court.
Some structures to look for along the trail are manmade rock walls, Jim Shook’s residence. The ruins and other structures on the Stiles estate are accessible by walking this gradual incline for approximately one and one-half miles.
Visit the Mountwood Park website and plan a day of geocaching and great learning experience. There’s plenty to do plus many other caches in this bountiful park.
