Portugal was one of the first countries in the world to have a Motorway, with the construction and inauguration in 1944 of the Lisbon - National Stadium stretch, which was the beginning of what would later be the Motorway Lisbon - Cascais (current A5).

Portugal foi dos primeiros países do mundo a ter uma auto-estrada, com a construção e inauguração em 1944 do troço Lisboa - Estádio Nacional, início do que seria no futuro a Auto-Estrada Lisboa - Cascais (actual A5).

However, although some other stretches were later built in the 1960’s and 1970’s, it was only by the end of the decade of 1980 that the large-scale construction of Motorways was initiated. Nowadays the net of Portuguese Motorways is widely developed and covers almost the entire territory, connecting all the coastlineand the main cities of the interior, in a total extension of approximately 2100 km .

No entanto, apesar de terem sido posteriormente construídos alguns outros troços nas décadas de 1960 e 1970, só no final da década de 1980 foi iniciada a construção de auto-estradas em grande escala.
Hoje em dia a rede de auto-estradas portuguesasé bastante desenvolvida e percorre quase todo o território, ligando todo o litoral e as principais cidades do interior, numa extensão total de aproximadamente 2100 km .

  The A2 is a Motorway financially run by the company Brisa, and to use it you have to pay a toll.  It was concluded in 2002, although its launching was in 1966, along with the inauguration of the bridge that was then called Ponte Salazar, but is currently named Ponte 25 de Abril.
It is the main link between Lisbon and the Algarve , having a length of 240 km that allows the connection between the capital and the South of the country to be done in about 2 hours.
It starts just after Ponte 25 de Abril and after leaving the Tejo in Almada, it crosses the Sado valley in the vineyards and plains between Palmela and the historical Alcácer do Sal. After that follows Grândola and the mines of Aljustrel and Castro Verde, on the intense plains of Alentejo. To the Algarve it begins in S. Bartolomeu de Messines and finally ends in the A22 - Via Longitudinal do Algarve .

A  A2  é uma auto-estrada concessionada à Brisa, e para nela se circular há que pagar portagem.
Foi concluída em 2002, apesar de o seu lançamento ter sido feito em 1966, em conjunto com a inauguração da então designada Ponte Salazar, actualmente Ponte 25 de Abril.
É o eixo fundamental de ligação de Lisboa ao Algarve, numa extensão de 240 km que permitem que a ligação entre a capital e o Sul do país seja efectuada em 2 horas.
Tem início após a passagem da Ponte 25 de Abril e depois de deixar o Tejo em Almada, cruza a Bacia do Sado nos vinhedos e planícies entre Palmela e a histórica Alcácer do Sal. Segue-se Grândola, e os coutos mineiros de Aljustrel e Castro Verde, nas intensas planícies alentejanas. Ao Algarve chega em São Bartolomeu de Messines e termina finalmente na A22 - Via Longitudinal do Algarve.

To stop or to park on the carriageway is considered a very serious offence and can be punished with a fee from 60 up to 300€, and license disqualification from 2 to 24 months.
Parar ou estacionar na faixa de rodagem consiste em Contra-Ordenação Muito Grave punível com coima entre 60 e 300€ e inibição de conduzir entre 2 e 24 meses.

Reverse, cross the central reservation, or drive against the traffic flow in the carriageway, hard shoulder or slip road is considered a very serious offence and can be punished with a fee from 240 up to 1200€, and licence disqualification from 2 to 24 months.
Fazer inversão do sentido de marcha, marcha-atrás ou circular no sentido oposto ao legalmente estabelecido, quer seja na auto-estrada, quer seja no respectivo acesso devidamente sinalizado, consiste em Contra-Ordenação Muito Grave, punível com coima entre 240 e 1200€ e inibição de conduzir entre 2 e 24 meses.
