Geocache Description:

Avast, Me Mateys!

This cache be placed by IsleLivin, and originally filled (way back in 2007, during our Year of the Piracte) by me mateys from Z Krewe - Galveston, Texas’ preeminent Mardi Gras Krewe (www.zkrewe.net).  Our mission is to perpetuate the spirit of Mardi Gras all year long, and our theme for Mardi Gras 2008 was Pirates!  Arr!

So what better way to help celebrate than a treasure hunt on a real pirate’s island!

Back between 1817 and 1820, Privateer Jean Lafitte settled on this Island, which he dubbed Campeache.  Lafitte left in the early 1820s, burning his residence to the ground.  However, it be rumored that he left behind some treasure hidden on this Island, to be retrieved later.

Although his treasure -- if it existed -- has never been found, this one can be.  It be a traditional cache filled with lots of “piratey” objects, including (initially): small treasure chests with keys (maybe containing treasure of their own!), an assortment of Mardi Gras beads and doubloons, a slightly-used pirate’s ear ring (along with a new one and an eyepatch), and multiple Travel Bugs, including me very own Pirate King Travel Bug.  There is even a special FTF prize that will look great aboard any pirate ship ye may “procure”!

Oh, by the way -- all hope abandon, ye who enter, and mind the “Beware of Snakes” sign.  (Actually, just be sure to close the gate, so they don’t all get out.)  The mosquitoes are killer, too, so watch out for ‘em! (They probably ate all the snakes, so...)

Check out Pirate King Travel Bug’s page for more information on his mission, and enjoy the cache!  And if you’re in Galveston during Mardi Gras, come by and check out Z Krewe!

And while you're in the area, check out the nearby Galveston Island TB Hotel (GC1F2R8)!

[Note to Geocacher:  This area is enclosed by a fence, but there is a gate, which is not locked.  This area is open to the public, and is part of the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail.  Additionally, this cache has been coordinated with Security for the nearby government facility.  They are aware of its presence and the fact that cachers as well as birders will be in the area.]
