Geocache Description:

The ruins of Salgó castle built on the top of a 625-metre high basalt cone are the most romantic expression of a thousand years of history in Salgótarján.

Castle of Salgó:
It was built on a steep cone projecting from high mountain ranges, on a natural stone rock. It is an asymmetrical ground-planned castle with a small inner tower. It stands on a steep mountain cone which is 625 meters above sea level. At the eastern corner of the outer line rise the walls of a large pentagonal ground-planned, thick walled tower. The core of the castle is an east west orientated 35 meters long inner fort. The donjon was built on the highest point. Only its northwestern and northeastern corners and the base walls are original. The present tower like building is constructed from the residues of a 20th century lookout tower and the restored medieval walls. A 25 meters long court building is attached to it from the west. Its small size entrance was found during the excavation. This entrance could be reached from a small courtyard strengthened by a wall. A cistern was found here.
The Eastern and Southern sides of the castle could both be protected from the cleverly placed pentagonal bastion, the cistern would save the lives of the castle's defenders, while the walls of the former keep are still defying the passage of time. The dungeon of the castle offers a magnificent view over the surrounding area, and in the neighbourhood of the castle hill there are wonderful rocks and a ravishing variety of lava shapes.
In front of the Castle is the Witchstone (Boszorkányko).

Boszorkányko (Witchstone):
The Boszorkányko (Witchstone) is 576 meters high. Its three sectioned bizarre ridge shows a number of various basalt formations. On the northeastern side of the ridge vertical, on the southeastern end horizontal layers can be seen. The columns characterizing the basalt is mostly appears in a rectangular form but curved polygonal columns can also be found. An educational path encircling the rock helps the visitors showing each stages of the volcanic eruption. Beside the geological sights the vegetation of the rock is also noticeable.
