Geocache Description:

Located in Downtown Edgefield at 500 Main Street.
Terrain is only because a little muscle might be needed to retrieve the cache. Area is actually in a parking lot...sort of!
The owner; Ike Carpenter; is aware of the cache and may just heckle you a bit if he is there.
He will also help you if you want.
He is a great guy!

If he isn't he said it is ok to look.
If anybody else questions you just tell 'em Ike said it was ok.

This is #81 in a looong series honoring(?) SC Geocachers.
As we honor the cachers we are also trying to bring you a little history or at least a cool place too!

Now we have never met GPSBlake, AKA: The Biking Cacher.
We know he likes to cache while riding his bike and that he hails from the Saluda area.
We also know that he has some neat hides.
Like Little Peachtree Rock Software Exchange(GCHNNX); Saluda County Wooden Bridge #1 (GCZR99); and BOZA 7 by mrwest (adopted by GPSBlake) (GC5501).
Try 'em all; you won't be disapointed!

We also figured that if he goes to "find himself" at this cache he might ask the gentleman there to "Carve me a bike".

The actual location of the cache is at Ike Carpenter's place on main street in Edgefield, S.C.
When you first arrive there you might think it is a junkyard but upon closer examination you will see wooden carvings that will make your eyes bulge.
Against the building is a horse trough that is dated to the 1700's...Ike say's George Washington's horse drank from it.

If you are very observant you will see the roots and 1/3 of a palmetto tree in the lot. That tree is one that died from the birthplace of Strom Thurmond and Ike is going to make it into a plant stand one day.
For now it has a different job!

There are so many fascinating things to see you will not believe!

You see, Ike Carpenter makes his bowls; spoons,toys and other carvings the same way they were made hundreds of years ago.
Painstakingly hand carving everything from single pieces of wood.
He is a reenactor of both colonial times and Civil War times; as well as a well known artisan.
He has been featured on PBS/ETV; NPR; and the Turner Network.
Five generations of his family have been wood carvers.

We spent hours listening to his tales of Edgefield County and surrounding areas.
We also spent hours listening to his detailed explanations and demonstrations on how he carves.
He showed us carvings of chains with balls inside of balls inside of boxes carved out of a single piece of wood by his father; a tractor on a chain carved by his Grandfather and many others including a working/moving pair of wooden scissors and pliers!

If you want to get the cache it is available at any time; but if you want to learn something and see beauty and history created in front of your eyes go between Tuesday and Friday; not too early as he is a late riser; but he stays pretty late in the evening.

And if you want you can order a bowl made; Pisces did!
But the waiting list is long....
Ike is very busy telling tales and entertaining people!
