A small cache on a new and little used trail in the N Sandias.
This cache is located on an uncompleted but very useable trail, an extension of the Faulty/North Mystery trail. Many thanks to thegeezers (cacher name) for putting me on to this beautiful and little used trail. The trail has been cleared but not completed, but is easy to follow. The only questionable point is a turn from N bound to W bound at N35 14.509, W106 23.611 (small cairn) when traveling from LaGunita Seca to the Sandia Cave parking area.
Follow directions to LaGunita Seca found at GC46C3 by Ganelo. Once at LaGunita Seca, follow the diamond-blazed trail to the North.
The Northern end of this trail terminates in the parking lot for Sandia Man Cave at N35 15.017, W106 24.582. DO NOT GO TO SANDA MAN CAVE. Turn East at these coords, walk up the canyon about 30 feet and you will find the trail. I did not realize this was ambiguous until reading Cyclegreens log.
One way walking distance from upper parking at 8100 feet to the lower (North) end parking lot at 7120 feet is 4.01 miles, with a 980' elevation decrease. If you approach the cache from below, the trail is only 1.2 miles but UP 780’. Approaching from above is 2.81 miles but down hill 200’. If you approach directly (bushwhacking), you have only yourself to blame. If you can pair up with two cars, leaving one at the bottom and walk down from the top, you have the best of all worlds.
The cache is a decon container about 10 feet off the trail, hanging in a small fir tree. Cache is so named because (1) my dog Andy wanted to rest here in the shade, and (2) because I deleted the original coords by mistake (senior moment), and had to go hunt it myself. Easy find once you get there—-my theory is if it is hard to get to, it should be easy to find.
Bonus: An old trail crosses this trail at N35 14.886, W106 24.327. Where does this trail go?
