Um pouco de História
Martinho de Dume, Martinho Dumiense ou
ainda Martinho de Braga (ou Martinho Bracarense) são os vários
nomes por que é conhecido Martinho da Panónia, um bispo de Braga e
de Dume considerado santo pela Igreja Católica.
Martinho nasceu na Panónia, actual Hungria, no século
VI. Estudou grego e ciências eclesiásticas no Oriente. De volta ao
Ocidente, dirigiu-se para Roma e para a França, onde visitou o
túmulo do seu conterrâneo Martinho de Tours. É tido como o apóstolo
dos Suevos, responsável maior pela sua conversão do arianismo ao
catolicismo.
Estabeleceu um mosteiro numa aldeia das proximidades de
Braga, Dume, a partir do qual começou a irradiar a sua pregação.
Estabeleceu a diocese de Dume (caso único na história cristã -
confinada ao mosteiro a que presidia), da qual foi primeiro bispo
e, depois, por vacatura da diocese bracarense, foi feito
metropolita de Braga, então capital do reino suevo.
Martinho de Dume é também uma figura de capital
importância para a história da cultura e língua portuguesas; de
facto, considerando indigno de bons cristãos que se continuasse a
chamar os dias da semana pelos nomes latinos pagãos de Lunae dies,
Martis dies, Mercurii dies, Jovis dies, Veneris dies, Saturni dies
e Solis dies, foi o primeiro a usar a terminologia eclesiástica
para os designar (Feria secunda, Feria tertia, Feria quarta, Feria
quinta, Feria sexta, Sabbatum, Dominica Dies), donde os modernos
dias em língua portuguesa (Segunda-feira, Terça-feira,
Quarta-feira, Quinta-feira, Sexta-feira, Sábado e Domingo), caso
único entre as línguas novilatinas, dado ter sido a única a
substituir inteiramente a terminologia pagã pela terminologia

A little history
Martinho de Dume, Martin Dumiense or Martin of Braga
(or Martin Bracarense) are different names for what is known of
Pannonia Martin, a bishop of Braga and Dume considered holy by the
Catholic Church.
Martin was born in Pannonia, now Hungary, in the sixth
century. He studied Greek and ecclesiastical sciences in the East.
Back to the West, is sent to Rome and to France, where he visited
the tomb of his countryman Martin of Tours. It is considered the
apostle of Suevos, more responsible for their conversion to
Catholicism of the Aryans.
Established a monastery in the nearby village of
Braga, Dume, after which began to radiate to his preaching.
Established the diocese of Dume (if only in Christian history -
confined to the monastery to which presided), which was the first
