Cette cache a été placée par Merecats le 18 aout 2007, puis adopté par Valdesairenet le 31 mars 2024.
Pour trouver le contenant, rendez vous au petit oratoire dédié à la vierge situé à 334m au sud du phare. De là, parcourez 180m à 167º par rapport à l'azimut.
A propos de cette boucle
Cette géocache fait partie d'une boucle de 7.2km à Gatteville-le-Phare. La boucle fait le tour de la commune en passant par la plage au Nord et à l’Est, et la campagne au Sud et à l’Ouest. Le circuit incorpore quelques géocaches existantes placées par d'autres géocacheurs telles que les mystery des Rafroquis et de de 7seven.
Sur le parcours, vous découvrirez l’église Saint-Pierre et ses deux clochers, la chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours, la Grange à Dîme, la batterie allemande de Roubary, le port de Roubary, le phare et le sémaphore, l'oratoire Notre-Dame-des-Feux, la croix de l’abbé Gaslonde, et la gare du Tue-Vaques. Nous recommandons un démarrage sur la place du village, près de l’église.
Les contenants sont de tailles variées et plusieurs sont assez grands pour recevoir des objets voyageurs et des babioles à échanger. Cette boucle rejoint d'autres circuits de géocaching : la boucle de Gouberville à l’Ouest au niveau du port de Roubary, et la boucle de Barfleur au Sud au niveau de l'anse de Crabec.

This is a simple offset cache that will take you to a lovely part of the Normandy coast.
Le Phare de Gatteville - History of the lighthouse
The lighthouse is situated 2 km to the north of the harbour of Barfleur and the structure that is there now was constructed between 1829 and 1834 at a cost of 332 215 French Francs (approx) to guide ships around this dangerous part of the peninsular. But there has been a lighthouse on this spot since 1774 using a coal fire to light the way.
This lighthouse is now the second largest in France and all of Europe and measures 75 metres to the top and is constructed by 11 000 pieces of granite weighing a colossal 7 400 000kg. The internal staircase has 365 steps to the top which takes you to a platform offering magnificent panoramic views to about 30 km's.
The lights were originally powered by rapeseed oil then by mineral oil in 1875 until the introduction of 2 steam powered machines creating electricity in 1892. In 1948, the lighthouse was linked up to the French national grid (EDF) and has been fully automated since 1984. The two xenon lamps, 1600 watts, give light to the equivalent of 35 million candles shining through some 52 windows and can reach 53km's. The light can be seen as far away as the Isle Of Wight, UK, and Le Harve, France.
The lighthouse now receives approximately 37000 visitors a year so if you have time make a visit to the lighthouse to discover its full history. The lighthouse is accessible to the public according to the following schedules:
- February/November/December: everyday, 10h00 to 12h00 and 14h00 to 16h00
- March and October: everyday, 10h00 to 12h00 and 14h00 to 17h00
- April and September: everyday, 10h00 to 12h00 and 14h00 to 18h00
- May to August: everyday (except the 1st May), 10h00 to 12h00 and 14h00 to 19h00
(closed:
mid-November to mid-December, and throughout January) It is opened during the school Christmas holidays.
