How Geocaching Works

Geocache Description:

On a marked pedestrian route by a lovely field in the prealpes, above the village of Les Paccots. An easy find and a pleasant walk. Not suitable for those unable to climb over a stile (fence crossing). May be difficult to locate cache in deep snow.

Plastic sandwich box in a plastic bag containing:
Logbook, pencil and pen
Small items to exchange
All items in plastic bags.

Public transport and driving advice:
1. Easiest way to get to a bus stop close by the cache (Summer only):
Take the bus from the bus stop called "Chatel-St-Denis, gare" (bus stop is by outdoor bench at ticket office end of the Chatel-St-Denis station). Get off at the bus stop called "Lac-des-Joncs" (final stop, summer only). Follow the road down from Auberge, then follow GPS co-ordinates. To plan your journey and check timings, go to the www.sbb.ch website.

2. Easiest way to drive to close by the cache:
Drive to Les Paccots. Immediately after the village centre, take the first road turning on the right (following the signpost to the Auberge du Lac des Joncs). After you have arrived in the ski area, do not take the turning on the right to the Auberge du Lac des Joncs, but continue on the same road for another minute. Park by La Cagne ski lift (N 46 30.704 E 006 57.046) and follow GPS to cache.

3. The most interesting way to get to the cache by public transport + walking (under an hour including bus and walking):
Take the bus from the bus stop called "Chatel-St-Denis, gare" (bus stop is by outdoor bench at ticket office end of the Chatel-St-Denis station). Get off at the final bus stop called "Les Rosalys, Place" (bus operates all seasons). Follow the sign for Les Rosalys Hotel. With your back to the hotel, follow yellow pedestrian markers across and up through the wood (this path is accessible during the winter with sturdy shoes).

At the top of the wood (N 46 30.828 E 006 57.206) turn left and follow the road. Continue on this road as it passes La Cagne ski lift (N 46 30.704 E 006 57.046) and follow GPS to cache.

4. The most interesting way to get to the cache by car + walking:
Drive first to Les Paccots village. Continue on the main road through the village. You will pass the Ermitage Hotel on the left and the winter skating rink on your right. Continue on this road for a few minutes until you reach a large parking area to the left of the road. You will see a road turning off to the right with a sign for Les Rosalys Hotel. Take this road turning. Park in front of the hotel, N 46 31.039 E 006 57 655. With your back to the hotel, follow yellow pedestrian markers across and up through the wood.

At the top of the wood (N 46 30.828 E 006 57.206) turn left and follow the road. Continue on this road as it passes La Cagne ski lift (N 46 30.704 E 006 57.046) and follow GPS to cache.

Nice local walks once you have found the cache:
There are lots of walks in the area, and here are just two. You may enjoy continuing your walk by following the signs to Les Pleiades (harder terrain with steps down to a gorge and then back up again). For an easier and quicker option after finding the cache, you might also enjoy going back along the road to N 46 30.814 E 006 56.897 and taking the road up to N 46 30.814 E 006 56.897 to the auberge and pretty lake.
