Geocache Description:

Be the Genealogist is a series based on my other hobby. It's a hobby that I enjoy doing, so much so, that I decided to allow other geocachers to get a taste of it. Although these caches are all puzzles, none are meant to be extremely difficult.

In addition, I decided that since I like hiking, I'd create some long ones. All the hikes in this series will require at least a half mile hike (as the crow flies), each way, to and from the cache.

This is one of six of the initial caches, that will lead to the final cache, for a total of seven caches. In order to get the final cache, there's a question related to the series finale on the inside cover of each container. Bring something to write on and with, to record the question, or take a picture of it. Answer all 6 questions, and you'll know where the final is.

The coordinates aren't where the cache is, rather it's a suggested parking space. The cache is located in the new part of Meadowood opened up within the last year a half. It's off of the Swamp Fox Trail, and there's no bushwhacking required until you get to about 200 feet. The trails are all newly created, and there's a lot more trails available here.

On to the puzzle part of this cache. It's based on the Census. It's a great tool for genealogists because it provides a variety of information on ancestors; including names, ages, and relationships. It's used as the basis of lots of genealogists' research. All census information in the United States is public information up to 1930. Eventually later census years will be become public information. The 1880 census, which this cache's puzzle is based on, is also freely available as well, located at sites like Ancestry.com and FamilySearch.org

Your job to get this cache, is to do some research on the 1880 census, and answer the following questions. Match the questions, and substitute the letters to get the coordinates.

N38 AB.ACD W077 1C.FGC

There are 25 questions that census takers asked on the 1880 census.

What number question asks:
A. Color of person
B. Whether the person is married (drop the tens digit)
C. Name of each Person
D. Whether the person is single
F. What number in order of interview is the Family
G. What sex the person is.

Remember, bring something to write on, to capture the question for the finale.

If you have any problem with the puzzle, or the coordinates, or any part of the cache, email me, and I'll help/fix any issues.

Thanks to MGSGAGAG for passing along and painting most of the containers for this series. Thanks to the BLM staff for allowing me to place this cache.

This Cache series was voted Best Series in NOVAGo's 2007 cache awards!
