Geocache Description:

This cache is placed in honor of Rocky the flying squirrel who taught many of us about freedom. It lies along Rocky Point Trail, one of the hidden jewels just below the Sandia Crest.

Rocky Point Trail parallels the Access Trail from Ellis Trailhead south to the upper Sandia Tram terminal. This trail is wonderfully delightful, whether hiking in the dry season or cross-country skiing in winter. In summer you'll see a mixed conifer forest with firs and spruce, aspen, and hard woods. Flowers include wild iris, penstamon, aster, bee weed, indian pain brush, berries, and wild roses. You might also find bear and deer scat right on the trail. In winter, the trail courses through the trees just east of the access road and provides winter solitude while most skiers and snowshoers are on the road or to trails to the west.

You'll find three major rock outcropings on the trail; hence the name of Rocky Point. Coordinates for the northern trailhead from parking at Ellis are N 35 12.437, W 106 26.430. Coordinates for the southern trailhead if coming off the tram are N 35 11.961 W 106 26.086. Elevation at the cache rocky point is 10,251'.
