Três Marias: This was one of our first cache hides. Started off in what we still think was the best place, but a few years down the line it got compromised. On the second spot the cache didn't survive the first winter and we ended up adopting an unconventional approach for this kind or place but still it managed to disappear twice... after almost 5 years it's time to rest!

Geocache Description:

A Lagoa da Vela está localizada no Bom Sucesso, concelho da Figueira da Foz e está inserida na Rede Natura 2000 ("Dunas de Mira, Gândara e Gafanhas"), sendo a maior lagoa desta Rede, com cerca de 70 hectares.
The "Lagoa da Vela" is a lagoon located in Bom Sucesso, Figueira da Foz and is a part of the "Rede Natura 2000". It's actually the largest lagoon on the Natura network, with about 70 acres.

Este sítio é um verdadeiro paraíso natural no qual nos poderemos abstrair do stress do dia a dia e observar uma larga variedade de espécies de aves. É, segundo a Associação dos Amigos dos Moinhos e Ambiente da Região da Gândara, "a segunda lagoa mais importante em termos de invernada para o Galeirão e, actualmente, a mais importante para o Pato-colhereiro Anas clypeata. Aqui nidificam espécies como o Pato-real Anas platyrhynchos, o Galeirão Fulica atra, o Mergulhão-pequeno Tachybaptus ruficollis, o Garçote Ixobrychus minutus, a Galinha-d’água Galinulla chloropus, a Cigarrinha-ruiva Locustella luscinioides, entre outras. Durante a migração outonal podem ser observadas espécies como o Maçarico-das-rochas Actitis hypoleucos, a Chilreta Sterna albifrons, entre outras. Durante o período estival pode ainda ser observada a Garça-vermelha Ardea purpurea e a Garça-real Ardea cinerea durante todo o ano."
This site is a natural paradise, ideal to relief the daily stress while observing a large variety of bird species. In fact, and according to the a local Environmental Association, the lagoon is one of the most significant nidification site for some duck species and is part of the migration path of several bird species.

Vindo pela EN109, que liga a Figueira da Foz a Mira, deverá sair para Oeste em N40º17.196' W8º46.091 (se vier de Norte) ou em N40º14.583' W8º47.432' ( vindo de Sul) de modo a chegar a uma estrada florestal que percorre a margem Oeste da lagoa. A cerca de 250m da cache existe um parque de merendas com parque infantil, bar-restaurante e estacionamento em N40º16.493' W8º47.513' onde poderá usufruir um pouco do sítio.
Take EN109 that connects Figueira da Foz to Mira and take the west exit at N40º17.196' W8º46.091 (coming from North) or at N40º14.583' W8º47.432' (from South) in order to reach a forest road running on the west side of the lagoon. About 250m from the cache there is a pick-nic area with a playground, restaurant/bar and parking at N40º16.493' W8º47.513' where you can enjoy the lagoon a bit.
