THE GOLGOTHA G.U.I.s
Short Description
A multi cache requiring some sharp-eyed observation, and simple substitution to arrive at the final cache. The coordinates given are of the first G.U.I. and the last G.U.I. is at N37º 04.874' ; W008º 40.183' (additional waypoint) Between these two points are a further 12 G.U.I.'s in a reasonably linear arrangement and at fairly regular distances. Each G.U.I. has a unique feature which enables it to be identified, and carries a unique number.
Long Description
In Lagos we have an old walled city, a hill, and a 'Via Dolorosa'. Not unlike a famous Biblical Walled City, and the hill on which the most significant event recorded in the New Testament was reputed to have occurred.
Calvary(kal'v?re) [Lat.,=a skull] or Golgotha(gol'g?th?) [Heb.,=a skull], in the Gospels, place where Jesus was crucified, outside what was then the wall of Jerusalem. Its location is not certainly known. The traditional identification of the site of Calvary was made by St. Helena, the mother of the Emperor Constantine, when she found (c.326) what was believed to be a relic of the actual cross on which Jesus was crucified. The spot is within the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. In 1885 General Charles G. Gordonproposed a site near the Damascus Gate, first suggested in 1842. This is called the Garden Tomb or Gordon's Calvary.
Following the crucifixion Jesus' body was laid in a secret tomb, from where he miraculously rose three days later.
The tradition has since been commemorated in the Roman Catholic Church, and used as a form of Pilgrimage, particularly at Easter.
The Stations of the Cross(or Way of the Cross; in Latin, Via Crucis; also called the Via Dolorosa or Way of Sorrows, or simply, The Way) refers to the depiction of the final hours (or Passion)of Jesus, and the devotion commemorating the Passion. The tradition exists in Roman Catholicism, Anglicanism and Lutheranism. It may be done at any time, but is most commonly done during the Season of Lent, especially on Good Friday and on Friday evenings during Lent.
The object of the Stations is to help the faithful to make a spiritual pilgrimage of prayer to the chief scenes of Christ's sufferings and death, and this has become one of the most popular devotions for Roman Catholics.
The Cache
G.U.I's are not a recent invention. In this cache they provide the means of solving the coordinates to reach the Final Resting Place. The total distance between the first and the fourteenth G.U.I. is about 1.88 km, and is a pleasant walk. There is ample car parking near the beginning, and it is possible that you may need to visit several of the G.U.I's more than once to confirm your finding.
The Final Resting Place is at N37º AB.CDE' ;W008º VW.XYZ'.
Each clue below refers to a unique G.U.I. whose number should be substituted for the letter in the above coordinates.
