Geocache Description:

Groenkloof Nature Reserve is the oldest Wildlife Conservation Area in Africa. The lions and the hyenas are gone, but over the years Fountain Valley has remained a park and recreation area. Initially the city fathers were only concerned about the water from the fountains. Up to 1930 all Pretoria’s water was obtained from here. During the 1970’s the foresters were keen for a hiking trail through the area, the thinning out and marketing of the wood in the plantation, the inter-planting of indigenous species and rehabilitating the are. Today much game is found on the reserve including Impala, Blesbuck, Red-hartebeest, Blue Wildebeest, Zebra, Giraffe, Kudu, and some smaller game like some Steenbuck, Jackal and Duiker. This rich diversity of flora and fauna makes Groenkloof Nature Reserve a must for visitors and is situated only 5km from Church Square as the crow flies.

The koppies in the nature reserve provides a beautiful view of the surrounding areas like Klapperkop Fort and Skanskop Fort.

Take note this cache is located close to a mountain bike trail, look out for muggles coming quickly around the corner.
