This formation is the Big Sister of another one a little to the south west. Very steep terrain and no trail to speak of once you get above the tree line. Container is an ammo box with logbook, pen and swaps.
Big Nellie is the name given to this volcanic plug that is visible from the Pacific Highway. The summit is signposted as being around 543m above sea level (ASL) however the GPS says it's more like 573m. In any case it's a fairly high point around here and the going is steep and rocky.
Note that the road beyond the Tea Tree Trail intersection is unsuitable for two-wheel drive vehicles when wet. Also, Big Nellie Road east of the carpark has a locked gate.
Parking is available at the waypoint. From here you take the track up the hill, through the bush to the top of the tree line. After that, the way up is marked with white paint and heads around to the left for a bit before turning and heading up the pitch.
The way is safe enough if you take care, very young geokiddies are not recommended. It can be very windy on top and slippery when wet. Mobile phone reception is good at summit (Telstra).
Refer to topographic map Lorne 9434-4S 3rd edition (WGS84) for terrain information, roads, etc.
Once again this is national park so take nothing but photos and leave nothing but footprints.
