Whitbeck Preserve is accessed from the Rail Trail, a 2.3-mile crushed rock walking trail in Ridgefield. Because Whitbeck Preserve’s trailhead is toward the east end of the Rail Trail, it is best to park on Hickory Lane, just off Florida Road, and walk south on Florida Road a very short distance to the Rail Trail. The Rail Trail will be on your right. The Whitbeck Preserve trailhead sign is approximately 475 feet from this entrance to the Rail Trail (south side of trail).
The coordinates listed are for the first stage of this three-stage multicache. Coordinates for the second stage are found in the first-stage container. Coordinates for the third(final) stage are found in the second-stage container. The first two stages are micro-containers (camouflaged waterproof matchstick holders). The final stage is an ammunition box.
Initial contents of this cache include: a 32-ounce Nalgene water bottle for the First to Find, a 16-ounce Nalgene water bottle for the Second to Find, a 3-pack of fishing floats, and the following Coleman camping supplies: a 50-foot package of braided nylon cord, a nylon cooking spoon, a ‘cool zephyr’ mini fan, a backpacker salt & pepper container, and 3 binder clips.
Whitbeck Preserve is a very small open space with several interesting features. There is a small pond where rocks were once quarried, and nearby a large boulder sits on a slope. There is a ledge with trees growing from it as well as a boulder-covered hill in the corner of the property. Hemlocks, oaks and tulip trees are present. Jack-in-the-pulpit is abundant. Birds are plentiful and a hawk's nest has been recorded in the area for several years. Mr. and Mrs. Norris Whitbeck donated this property as Open Space in 1993.
