Geocache Description:

The cache is in the vicinity of Buffavento Castle built by the Byzantines and is the central one of three castles guarding the Kyrenia Mountains and so protecting Cyprus's north coast. The position of the three castles was critical so that each could control its own section of shoreline and communicate instantly by mirrors with the lowlands of the south and so with Nicosia. The castles of St Hilarion and Kantara could also comunicate with Buffavento in the middle. Without these castles, invading saracens could attack Kyrenia before anyone in the Capital had any warning.
The Lusignans (see google Kingdom of Cyprus-wikipedia) reinforced the castles and added royal apartments, but by 1525 with the methods of war and the carrying of news changing the Venetians decided to abandon the castles.
The cache is a small plastic bucket with a blue lid containing log book and a selection of swopable items.
