This is a real simple mystery cache, and will give you a great view of the park. Start at the above coordinates, which is a large, square, gray rock (you are just a hop, skip and jump away from the final spot), and do the following math:
- there use to be flagpoles here, but if you look you will be able to see where they were located and count the number of flagpole remnants located at this spot, and total flagpole remnants = X
- for the FINAL NORTH coordinate, multiply by X by 3 and subtract 4, which = Y
- now ADD Y to the starting North coordinate and you now have the final North coordinate
- for the FINAL WEST coordinate, multiply X by 4 and subtract 6, which = Z
- now SUBTRACT Z from the starting West coordinate and you now have the final West coordinate
- you are less than 200 feet from the cache!
Super stealth is required here, especially during lunchtime. This cache is located near several courthouses. There is metered parking all along 3rd street, and there are several meter police officers assigned to ticket the vehicles with expired meters. Pay It Forward is an opportunity to help someone avoid a ticket. Take a coin from the cache and find a meter about to expire and help someone out!!! WOW...that felt great. Please keep the cache container filled with nickles, dimes and quarters and go forth and prosper! It's the loveliest green getaway to be found Uptown!!!
So what about the park, you ask? Well, Uptown Charlotte has a few nice get-a-way spots, and Marshall Park is one of the favorites for nearby office and business workers. The park is a postcard-worthy landscape of rolling lawns, fountains, dogwoods, large oaks and seasonal blossoms. A wedge of greenery meticulously landscaped in the heart of Second Ward, Marshall Park also boasts a rippling pond, several fountains, water-side and elevated viewing points, and is commonly teeming with quacking ducks and other waterfowl. In addition, you have an impressive view of local government buildings and the towers of Uptown Charlotte.
The park is named after James B. Marshall, the engineer who helped construct Independence Boulevard and a number of other famous city projects. According to a Charlotte Observer article, James B. Marshall was hired in 1935 as Charlotte City Manager. A native of Anderson, S.C., Marshall was a brilliant engineer who had graduated from the College of Charleston before settling in Charlotte in the 1920s. By the end of May, 1935, Marshall was busily at work preparing a list of projects for submission to the Works Progress Administration for possible funding. One of the major projects underway at the time Marshall was hired was the American Legion Memorial Stadium (known as Memorial Stadium adjacent to the CPCC Campus at 7th and Independence Blvd). City leaders urged that "some immediate action" be taken "toward completing the stadium in Independence Park." Not surprisingly, Marshall included the completion of Charlotte’s stadium on his list of W.P.A. applications. The stadium was officially completed on September 1, 1936. In addition, the largest project for which the City sought W.P.A. funding was the creation of a municipal airport.
