Koli
Kolin vaaralta aukeaa eräs Suomen tunnetuimmista kansallismaisemista. Ukko-Kolin huippu kohoaa 347 metriä merenpinnan yläpuolelle. Kolin vaaralta avautuvat upeat näköalat Pieliselle ja Pohjois-Karjalaiseen maisemaan. Vaara on iältään hyvin vanha. Kolin huiput ovat eräitä parhaiten eroosiota kestäneitä kohtia muinaisesta Karelidien vuoristosta. Karelidit poimuttuivat lähes 2 miljardia vuotta sitten ja olivat aikoinaan yhtä mahtava vuoristo kuin Himalaja (joka poimuttuu yhä). Karelidien poimuttumisen aikoihin maapallolle kehittyivät yksinkertaisten solueliöiden rinnalle aitotumalliset solut. Maapallon iäksi arvioidaan noin 4,7 miljardia vuotta. Koli on ollut siis olemassa reilusti yli kolmasosan maapallon iästä.
Kolin huiput ovat kvartsiittia, joka on syntynyt Karelidien vuoriston poimuttumisen yhteydessä valvatavassa paineessa muinaisesta merenpohjasta aikaisemmin muodostuneesta kalkkikivestä. Karelidien yläkerrokset ovat ajan myötä kuluneet eroosion myötä, mutta kova kvartsiitti on kestänyt kulutusta muita vuoriston osia paremmin. Kolin huipulta näet myös monia merkkejä jääkausista.

Luminen aika:
Jos Koli olisi muutaman kymmenen metriä korkeampi, se olisi Suomen eteläisin tunturi, sillä sen korkein huippu Ukko-Koli sijaitsee juuri ja juuri paikallisen puurajan alapuolella. Nyt jokunen puu sinnittelee vielä aivan Kolin korkeimman kohdan tuntumassa tehden Kolista vaaran. Tykkylumen puille aiheuttamat vauriot ovat kuitenkin merkittäviä tällä korkeudella ja sen huomaa puustosta.
Tehtävä: Arvioi, miten paksu on tykkylumikerros "puu - tree" reittipisteen osoittamassa paikassa olevien käkkyräisten mäntyjen päällä.
Lumeton aika:
Eniten eroosiota Kolin huipuille ovat viimeaikoina aiheuttaneet jääkaudet. Jääkauden aikana kovakin kvartsikivi uurtuu valtavien 2-3 kilometrin korkuisten jääkenttien alla.
Tehtävä: Paha-Kolin koordinaatit vievät sinut infotaulun luokse. Taululla on kuva sirppimurroksesta. Etsi Paha-Kolin laelta sirppimurros ja mittaa sen leveys, korkeus ja syvyys.

Koli - English
One of the best known Finnish views opens from the Koli hill. The peak of Ukko-Koli rises 347 meters above the sea level. You can admire wonderful view to lake Pielinen and surrounding hills from the Koli peak. Koli hill is very old. It is one of the best surviving remnants of ancient fold mountains the Karelids. The Karelids folded almost 2 billion years ago and were just as enormous as mountains of Himalaya (that are still folding). During the folding of the Karelids first eukaryotic cells evolveld. The earth is estimated to be about 4.7 billion year old. It is just 2.7 billion years older than Koli.
The peaks of Koli are quartzite stone that has formed when the Karelids folded. Quartzite was originally sand stone from ancient sea sand that cemented first into sand rock and then to much toughter quartzite rock. The main part of the Karelids mountains have eroded away but harder quartzite parts (Koli and fells of eastern Finnish Lappland) have lasted longer. You can also see many evidence of ice ages from the peaks of Koli.

In order to log this cache you need to answer the following question and send your answers by email to cache owner. You can log the cache when you get the permission from the owner. Notice that question varies according the time of the year. Remember to add a picture to your log.
Go to the peak of Ukko-Koli. While admiring the scenery notice the line of long narrow islands on the lake Pielinen. The islands are the highest points of an esker ridge stretching through the bottom of the lake. The esker was formed during the last ice age and it has been formed by ice rivers.
Next task depends on time of the year:
There is snow on he ground
If the Ukko-Koli would be just a couple of dozens meters higher it would be the southest fell of Finland. The tree line is just about 20 meters higher where Ukko-Koli peak stands. Now you can see a couple of trees struggling near the peak of Ukko-Koli making Koli tree covered hill in stead of fell. Each year the trees of Koli have snowy crown on them. This crown snow forms when snow, ice and frost stick to tree and pile up during the winter.
The task: Estimate the thicknes of crown snow on the trees on "puu - tree" waypoint coordinates.
No snow on the ground:
Koli has erored lately mainly because of ice ages. During the ice age even very hard quartzite stone grinds because 2-3 kilometer tall claciers. You can see the signs of wearing by ice on rock surfaces.
The task: Go to the peak of Paha-Koli (Evil Koli). The waypoint takes you close to peak to an info board. There is a picture of a crescentic gouge on the board. Find one crescentic gouge on Paha-Koli peak and measure its width, height and depth.
Remember also to visit the Heritage Centre and nature trails on Koli area!
