Geocache Description:

This cache can be found on the edge of Fordingbridge. The settlement of Fordingbridge (just Forde then) was noted in the Domesday Book of 1066. Parking is available very nearby.

This cache is in the Recreation Ground and Memorial Gardens near The Great Bridge over the wonderful Hampshire Avon, from which Fordingbridge derives it’s name. The earliest was probably built of wood. The arches of the 14th C sandstone bridge can be seen beneath the structure of the great five arched bridge we see today, which largely dates to 1841. (A pint on terrace of The George gives an excellent view of the old sandstone arches.)

Strangely, it was at time used as a rubbish disposal point! Court records of 1764 mention a 10 shilling fine for throwing ashes at the end of the bridge, which should have been taken to the middle to be thrown!

The George, previously known as the Great George (there was a little George at Horseport) is the oldest surviving inn, dating to at least the 15th C. (Re-attributed to George III)

Fordingbridge is well served by watering places. Our favourites? For coffee, snacks and meals, “River Cafe” or the “Fig Tree” , both on the High St. Otherwise, any of the local pubs or cafes will look after you well.

The cache is a tiny micro, with only space for a very small log sheet. You will need to bring your own pen or pencil. It is, I hope, a unique container in this area, so you will need to have your wits about you.

CHILDREN SHOULD TAKE GREAT CARE AS THE CACHE IS NEAR TO THE RIVER AVON.

The cache is visible WITHOUT opening any equipment. Please do not tamper with the nearby safety equipment in any way. You do not need to look inside.
