On a koppie overlooking the Colbyn Valley wetland.
In Colbyn Valley, the Hartbeesspruit runs through a 'poort' between two quartzitic ridges and the narrowing effect of the poort causes the stream to back up and broaden out, forming a wetland. Another stream joins the Hartbeesspruit at this point, creating further back-flooding upstream of this meeting point. There are also seepage areas, most of which are groundwater driven, on the edges of the valley and these enhance the wetland area.
The total extent of the Colbyn Valley is about 80 ha and the area comprises grassland, wetland, peatland and the vegetation of a relatively unspoilt koppie. Six bird species of the 108 sighted in the valley are threatened, while of the 25 mammal species discovered in the area, several are on the vulnerable to rare list.
