Tysk bunkeranlegg på Smørbollen ved Fokstugu.
Det tyske bunkeranlegget øst for fokstugu er antagelig ett av de aller største forsvarsanlegg fra den andre verdenskrig i innlands-Norge.
I forbindelse med Dovre kommunes krigsminneprosjekt ble det høsten 1996 foretatt 46 registreringer av bunkere og andre byggverk i område.
Anlegget består av OP-post, vaktrom og løpegrav på toppen av Smørbollen, et trettitalls bunkere i lia nedenfor, oppstillingsplass for biler, samt andre ruiner.
Bunkerne går i parallelle rekker; to rekker opp mot Smørbollen, og to rekker parallelt med den gamle riksvegen i 300-400 meters lengde.
Alle bunkerne er stort sett like.
De er bygd opp av stein, er sirkelrunde med én eller to innganger, sju-åtte meter i diameter, og ti-tolv meter lange.
I midten er det støpt en betongplatning for ovn.
Taket var laget av trekantete lemmer med en svak helling.
Noen av bunkerne hadde til og med tapét på veggene.
I tillegg skal det ha vært både gatelys og telefonforbindelse mellom bunkerne, samt OP-posten på Smørbollen.
Strategisk var anlegget godt plassert: Fra Smørbollen hadde tyskerne full oversikt fra Hundyrju til Vålåsjøen.
De hadde også full kontroll over Dovrebanen og gamle riksvei 50 (E6)
Forsvarsanlegget hadde neppe kanoner eller tyngre bevæpning, men var oppsatt med maskingevær, handvåpen og muligens bombekastere.
Det var nok ikke forlagt stasjonære tyske styrker i anlegget under krigen.
Anlegget var bygd ved hjelp av russiske krigsfanger som var forlagt på Fokstugu.
Her var det også forlegning for mange tyskere.
Det tyske angrepet på Sovjetunionen kom 22.juni 1941. Siden store mengder russiske krigsfanger kom til Norge fra 1942 og utover, er det grunn til å tro at anlegget er bygd mellom 1942 og 1945.
Forsvarsanlegget er forbausende intakt, selv om det meste av treverk er borte etter mer enn 50 år.
Det er planer om å restaurere deler av anlegget.

German bunker facilities at Smørbollen (Butterbowl), nearby Fokstugu.
The German bunker facility east of Fokstugu, is most likely one of the geatest defense facilities from the world war two, positioned in the inner countryside of Norway.
By Dovre Memory of War-project during the autumn in 1996, there were made 46 registrations of different bunkers and other facilities in the area.
The Deutsche Wermacht bunker facility is consisting of an OP-Post, guard`s room (Wache-Raum), and runners ditch (laufen grab), about 30 others bunkers at the hill below, a car park space, together with other ruins.
The bunker´s run`s in parallel lines : two lines goes up towards Smørbollen, while two other line of bunkers run parallel with the old highway with a length of about 650 and 950 feet.
All the bunker`s has just about the same construction and are mostly similar to each other.
Build by stone, as this is the construction material, they are circle-round of shape, with one or two entrances, 23 or 26 feet at diameter, and 32 to 39 feet long.
In the middle there is a concrete-plate made for an own.
The roof was made of triangular shaped hatches with a weekly graded inclination.
Some of the bunkers even had wallpaper.
In addition to this, the facilities were supposed to have both streetlights and phone-connection between the bunkers, as to the OP-post position at Smørbollen.
The strategic position of this facility was very good : From Smørbollen the German forces had a complete view all the way from Hondyrju to the Vålå water.
They also had complete control of the railroad Dovrebanen, and the old highway 50 (today E6).
The defense facility did most likely not have any canons or heavy artillery installed, but there were machinegun pillboxes, handgun`s and perhaps mortars.
The facility was probably not housing permanent German forces during the war.
It was made by the hands of Russian prisoners of war, who were incarcerated at Fokstugu.
There it also was stationed a support for many German troop`s.
The German attack on the Soviet Union started at the 22 of June, 1941.
Since many Russian war prisoners was sent to Norway from 1942 and out the war, there is a good reason to belive that this specific facility has been built between 1942- and 45.
The defense bunker facility is in an amazingly good preserved condition, even though most of the woodwork is now gone, after more than 50 years of time.
Restoration for some parts of the facility is now being considered.
